Excerpt
I opened my eyes, slightly surprised I was still in my own bed. Farranen looked down at me, his eyes a storm of dark green that I could see even in the near-darkness. His thumb gently stroked my neck while his fingers had slid deeper into my hair, not gripping or pulling, just resting, like they belonged there.
“What are you doing?” I whispered.
I wasn’t sure I wanted to know the answer. Whatever he was doing felt good. Too good. I didn’t want him to stop and that scared me. I didn’t like giving someone else control over my happiness.
Little zings of sensation continued to radiate from where he touched me.
“Your magic calls to me.” Part of his stony expression dropped, and I could see astonishment and maybe a little fear. “You’ve started the change.”
“No.” Apprehension crept into my awareness, pushing aside some of the warm fuzzy feelings.
“The magic is in you.” It would have sounded hokey if he hadn’t been so sincere. I’d have to remember that line the next time I was writing.
“No, it’s not.” Great, Theo, argue with a fae who was probably an expert on magic. Real productive.
His smile was hesitant and, for some reason, helped to calm my rising panic. “The magic is there. It senses my magic and responds. Do you not feel it too?”
I nodded, not quite ready to give his theory verbal affirmation.
