Excerpt:

Dawn

I missed the grand fnale

The great fete,

And the festivals of spring.

I’ve slept through the choruses

Of birthdays and merriments,

Turned on my side while the parade went by

With no thoughts of fags or drums

Dulled by the beating of your heart

Next to mine.

No chorus could sing the words “good morning”

So beautifully,

No country’s colored fag can rival the

Eyes that greet me frst —

What can money buy but an expensive hearse?

Their meanings are lost at dawn

When the frst rays of light break in

When all my aspirations are beside me wrapped in love and

skin.
