My Review:
Can a US marshal protect a key witness from a diabolical killer without losing his heart? I was looking for a romantic suspense and boy oh boy, this delivers. With an action-filled plot, characters that are 100% realistic you’ll love to root for, plus an unexpected romance, The Last Enemy is one book I couldn’t put down.
Let’s start with the characters. I connected with Dani right away. She’s a woman on the run from a very bad man. She’s got more courage in her pinky finger than most people I know. She’s doing the right thing by testifying to put a killer behind bars. But things go terribly wrong, like they do in real life. Can she trust anyone? Well, she’ll have to put her trust in someone, eventually, or she’ll wind up dead.
The narration is descriptive and vivid. There are many action scenes, and these scenes are detailed and read like a movie. The tension is also descriptive through the POVs. Pauline Baird Jones is known for her immersive narration, and she does a brilliant job here.
The romance subplot is a minor part of the story, but it is well written. It adds a nice break from the action and suspense. I kept rooting for these two to make it work.
This is book one in the Lonesome Lawmen series and it’s really good. I can’t wait to read the next one.
