Excerpt:

“Hey,” Ben said, leaning back with a smile at the sound of Maia’s voice in his ear. He shouldn’t be smiling. She puzzled him more than any woman he’d ever dated.

He’d always been a sucker for red hair, even though he’d been burned by the temper that seemed to go with the red more than once.

Maia seemed to go against type on that front. She was mellow and mysterious, though there were the odd glimpse of lightning, there and gone again.

No question they were both stepping carefully around each other.

She always seemed surprised when he called or texted.

And he was surprised that she answered.

“You got anything on for tomorrow?” he asked, keeping it light and bracing for her regretful no. He knew she worked remotely, something geeky that his sister Jillian would probably understand. He’d have introduced them before now if—

He stopped the thought. Neither of them talked much about their family.

He knew she was visiting her mom. That she lived in Wyoming. Her dad kept cows or something.

And she didn’t know how many siblings he had.

Which was why he hadn’t introduced her to Jillian. His sisters seemed to take a peculiar pleasure in updating anyone he dated with the facts of his family size.

She hesitated, just long enough for his insides to tighten. That wasn’t good. He couldn’t let himself like her too much. Just because half his family were falling in love, didn’t mean he had to take the dive, too. She was fun to be with. That was all.

“I’m supposed to help work on the Mardi Gras truck float. It’s part of my Louisiana education,” she said.

“Can I help?” he asked and then made a face. This was the first glimpse she’d given him into her Louisiana family—other than that they lived outside New Orleans, along a bayou.

Her hesitation was longer this time, then she gave this low chuckle that sent shivers down his spine.

“If you really want to,” she said. “I have no idea what we’d be getting into.”

“What time?” he asked.

She told him, then dropped him a pin. It was the first time he knew where she was when she wasn’t with him.
