Title: Tails California

Author: Grea Warner

Genre: Women’s Fiction/New Adult

Book Blurb:

The week was supposed to end with a white dress and promises. It didn’t. Instead there was a black hearse.

Bethany and Ryan’s dream day is marred by the unexpected news of someone close to them passing away. More than ever, they need to lean on each other to help get through this devastating loss. But it won’t be easy.

Grief has its own timeline and also has a unique way of assigning blame … warranted or not. Not only is Bethany struggling with her own emotions, but she feels helpless when it comes to her role in the family. Is Ryan pulling away? Are the kids acting differently? And why would a fantastic career opportunity cause such anger and stress?

Will their coin flip bring a happily ever after or a sad goodbye?

My Review:

Happily ever after dreams spiral out of reach and Bethany is left wondering where she fits into Ryan’s life. The week of their wedding, Ryan drops a bombshell, and Bethany reels with the news. Before she can wrap her head around words like 'dead’ and ‘overdose’, Ryan calls off the wedding. This is no ordinary death, it’s Kari, and the aftermath for Ryan, the kids, and Bethany is far-reaching. Grief is a process with no starting point and no finish line. Each person reacts differently. All Bethany knows is that in order for them to move forward as a family, they have to work through emotions like guilt, blame, sadness, loss, and betrayal. As time passes, the love between Ryan and Bethany is put to the test. Will they survive it stronger than ever, or will they fracture, leading to a tearful goodbye?

Tails California is a heartwrenching story I couldn’t stop reading. Seriously, I read late into the night. There are many themes, twists, and turns this book takes on and all of it is beautifully written. The descriptive narration and deep POV plunge the reader into the story. There were many times when I was so overcome with emotion, I cried. My heart broke for Bethany, Ryan, and the kids. Grief is something hard to express but Grea Warner portrayed grief and sorrow through these characters with incredible accuracy. The ending made me cry, so be forewarned and have plenty of tissues. I love a good book that makes me cry, don’t you? If you’re like me and love an emotional piece of fiction, you’ll want to read Tails California. If your reading jam is women’s fiction, you’ll love Tails California. A poignant book on grief, closure, and love. Highly recommend!
