Title: The Earl’s Scottish Hoyden

Author: Alina K. Field

Genre: Regency Romance

Book Blurb:

Coerced by her brother to spend an English Christmas at the country estate of the handsome but cold earl who all but jilted her a year earlier, Edme Beecham is determined to do no more than assist her brother in his business negotiations with the earl, and by all means, to protect her heart.

The Earl of Cottingwith has been balancing the needs of his new title and estate, his budding shipbuilding business, and an unexpected ward. A year earlier, nipping the bud in a possible family scandal, he’d rushed away from the Scottish lass who’d stolen his heart.

The cold, aloof girl who appears at his home for Christmas could not be his Scottish hoyden, could she?

Excerpt:

His gaze swept over her. If she didn’t know she was still perfectly covered from her neck to her bare toes, she’d swear she’d just been undressed.

His gaze lingered awhile on her feet and when he raised his eyes to her, they fair glowed with a heat that sent ripples through her.

He touched the plait that hung over her breast down to her waist. “This glorious hair. I wondered how long it was.”

She summoned some sauciness. “And n-now ye know.” Hades, her voice had trembled.

Cottingwith’s gaze strayed to her breasts again, and she wondered if the white dressing gown and the nightgown underneath quite concealed her. The light from the branch of candles on the mantel lit sparks in his eyes.

He moved his hands down to envelope hers, and she found herself shivering, wishing he would pull her into his arms and warm her, waiting for it.

She must get a grip on herself.

“I didn’t want to wait to speak to you. I owe you the truth, don’t I, Edme? The truth, an apology, and an explanation for why I left Kinmarty so suddenly last Christmas.”

Her breath caught and she raised her eyebrows, summoning her pride. “Ye made no promises—of course ye don’t—”

“I do owe you.” He set a finger to her lips, and she wished it were his lips touching hers instead.

A kiss. Just a kiss.

“Given the attention I showed you, you had every right to expect more from me last Christmas. I wasn’t forthright with you, but I was courting you. Had matters progressed as I’d hoped, I would have traveled to Edinburgh and met your mother and brothers. I would have invited all of you south so you might know me better before deciding. It was what I meant to do. I was courting you, am courting you now, if you’ll allow it.”

That distracting finger sketched a line along her cheek to just below her ear.

He was courting her, but he hadn’t said anything because he wanted to meet her mother and brothers, and… “Is that why ye started writing to William? Were ye asking his permission to court me? Or…” She wrinkled her nose. “Are ye planning to seek Archie’s?”

“I’m asking you first.”

His hand cradled her jaw and slid round to cup the back of her head.

That had been the right answer. She sighed, leaned forward, and her lips finally met his.
