Excerpt From Aquarius:

“Hey, Bruno, want a treat?” The black mastiff stuck his head between the front bucket seats and drooled over the torn pleather armrest.

“Here ya go. You’re the kind of guy I like, quiet, cuddly, and a great bodyguard.” The van backfired as Twila slowed for a red light. She made a mental note to check the spark plugs. In the distance, a man darted across the street and ran along the sidewalk. Three other guys followed close on his heels. She gunned the engine, and a moment later screeched to the curb. The brakes locked, and she bumped the concrete edge before jamming the gearshift into park. Her hair caught up in bows created two pigtails that swung with fury as she scrambled out of the driver’s side of the vehicle, her yellow Taser in hand.

“Get away from him,” she screamed at the three thugs threatening the man, who a moment ago slipped on the rain-soaked autumn leaves that littered the sidewalk. They approached him, knives flashing in the van’s headlights.

“Raggedy Annie, what you gonna do about it?” the biggest of the three yelled.

She raised her Taser, the yellow barrel pointed at the men now stalking toward her. “I’ll set your balls on fire if you take one more step.”

Two of the men backed away, but the bulkiest of the three took another step. “I’m not afraid of a scrawny bitch.”

“You should be.” She pulled the trigger. The man bounced back on his ass, groaning as he landed on the ground. The other two ran in the opposite direction, one glancing over his shoulder as he turned the corner into the park.

She hustled around the front of the van, aiming for the man who slipped. He raised his arms in surrender. “I’m in no shape to fight you.”

“That’s good, but if we don’t get out of here, that big one there will get up shortly, and I’m sure his cowardly friends will be back with reinforcements.” She hunched down and wrapped his arm around her neck to hoist him up. “Can you walk?”

“I’ll manage to hobble.”

In the distance, male voices shouted, “This way.”

“Get in.” She left him by the passenger side then scurried around to her open door, hopped in, and turned the key. The engine moaned and clicked. She pumped the gas pedal and tried again. With a rumble and a bit of smoke out the back, the van started. She shifted into drive, lurching forward as five guys rounded the corner. She did a U-turn, making a few cars blow their horns, but in the end, she maneuvered away from the group, thankful they didn’t pull out guns and fire at her.

“What were you doing walking alone along the park at this time of night?” she asked the man, who studied her with a beaming grin plastered on his face.

“Do you always put yourself at risk by picking up strange men after midnight?”

“I have the Taser, and Bruno will handle you if you get out of hand.” She jerked her head toward the back seat. Drool hung from the dog’s massive mouth as he panted a greeting.

“Well, holy heck, how on Earth did I miss that guy?”

“He rarely barks, but he’ll defend the person caring for him if threatened. That happens to be me tonight. So, why were you walking alone? Do you have a death wish?”

“No, of course not. I’m not far from my apartment, and I had stuff to sort out in my head. I wasn’t paying attention, or I would’ve been more careful. Then I slipped and twisted my ankle. These shoes aren’t meant for walking on slick surfaces.”

“Wall Street shoe porn. Some men are as vain as some women. Leather soles and wet leaves don’t mix.”

“I’ll make note of that. If you pull over after the next light, I’ll only be a block from my place.”

“If you give me your address, I’ll drop you off out front of your building. Or are you embarrassed to be seen getting out of this van?”

“West Fifty-Seventh.” The slight hesitancy in his voice proclaimed she’d hit the nail on the head.

“I bet it’s the new, tall building, and you live in the penthouse. Where’s your chauffeur tonight?” She mimicked his voice.

“If it’s any of your business, I sent him home.”

“Oops, you thought you’d be spending the night with your date. Miscalculated, did ya?”

He outright laughed. “You’re very perceptive. But not quite right. I’m the one who said no. She seemed a bit too eager to get me into bed.”

“That’s a turn. You misjudged her commitment to you. Don’t tell me, all she wanted was your money. God, you must hate that.” She snickered.

“Now you’re ridiculing me.”

“Not really. A guy like you uses his money to get what he wants until the other person wants his money. Can’t have it both ways. If you want a woman to like you for you—which, by the way, is a crock line—then you need to not flaunt your money.”

“And you know this how?” He crossed his arms, probably pissed at her bullseye assessment of him.

“Life lessons.”
