Excerpt:

Fiona’s lips softened in a delighted grin as she watched Josh play catch with his son in the backyard. He tossed the ball carefully to guarantee that it had a good chance of landing in the boy’s mitt each time. The concentration on Chad’s face, his tongue poking out between his lips, stole her heart.

She quickly dried her hands, tossed the towel on the counter, grabbed her camera, and skipped out the back door. Enough of being tucked away in the kitchen. She clicked off a few shots then set her camera down. Spying the small bat leaning against the wall, she picked it up, hefting it in her hands, before taking a practice swing. The motion caught Josh’s and Chad’s attention and they paused to watch. With a confident stride—and enough wiggle in her hips to keep Josh’s focus on her—she walked over to Chad.

“Hey, buddy,” she ruffled his hair. “What say we do a little batting practice? Hit that ball to the moon?”

Chad looked down and drew an arch with his foot on the grass. “I’m not very good.”

Fiona cupped his chin in her hand and gently urged him to look at her. “Sweetie, none of us start out as sluggers. That’s why we call it practice. I’ll help you.” She tossed his mitt to the side and showed him how to grip the bat. With her hands over his, they took a few swings. “How does that feel?”

He twisted his head and grinned at her. “Pretty good. Do you think I’ll be able to hit the ball?”

She grinned at Josh and winked. “With your dad pitching? Easy peasy. The guy on the mound only throws lollipops. You’re going to nail it.” She kept her arms around him. “We’ll do it together.”

Josh put his hands on his hips, but she could see the scamp in his eyes. “I resent that.” He executed a mock wind up and then tossed a soft, underhand pitch straight at Chad’s bat.

Fiona led Chad in the swing and follow through. She felt the softball connect with the bat and watched the ball sail half way across the yard.

“I did it. I did it.” Chad’s head barely missed connecting with her chin amidst his excited bouncing. She dodged just in time.

“You did. Good job.” She knelt in the grass and hugged him tight. She couldn’t be prouder of the little guy than if he was her own son. Her throat constricted. She didn’t have time to be anyone’s mommy.

Josh sprinted to retrieve the ball then waited for a high-five from Chad. “I’m proud of you, buddy. Should we do a few more practice pitches?”

Nine pitches later, Josh lifted his baseball hat and dragged his hand over his hair. “I think it’s time you practiced with the batting tee for a while.”

Fiona straightened, her hand pushing on the small of her back, and mouthed a silent thank you.

Author Biography:

Rumor has it that Bonnie began telling stories at a very early age. Photos exist of the author toddling around the corner of the house covered in mud babbling about magic rabbits leading her through the garden. Her parents were amused – until they discovered she had also walked across the newly poured cement patio – which only added fuel to the fire of her passion for writing. From then on, her active imagination continued to churn out plots and character sketches always wondering how different people would behave in similar situations.
