Title: The Good Griffin

Author: J. C. McKenzie

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Book Blurb:

He’s a good griffin, with a bad temper…

Damian Charming yearns to sweep a certain feisty lynx shifter off her feet. Every time he tries to talk to her, however, he sticks his foot in his mouth. He doesn't mean to sound condescending. Life would be easier if Lucy admitted he knows best, especially now that someone in town has threatened her. He’s a good griffin (mostly) until someone messes with what’s his.

She’s an unlucky lynx with no time for trouble…

Lucy May hates Stillwater detective Damian Charming. Sure, he helped her with a horrible situation and has looks to rival the gods, but he also views lynx shifters as inferior supernatural beings. When someone targets the business she worked hard to create, though, Lucy turns to the one man she knows will mercilessly unearth the culprit.

It’s more than just hex appeal…

When a hex sends the town in a storm of sexual shenanigans in the middle of the investigation, Lucy realizes just how bad she has it for the griffin. Now she needs to convince Damian her feelings are true and reel him in before his need for vengeance destroys the entire town.

The books in That Old Black Magic world and the Heart’s Desired Mate series can be read as standalone stories and in any order.

My Review:

Detective Damian Charming holds a secret not many shifters in the cozy town of Stillwater know: he’s a griffin. While most people believe griffins are all myth, Damian is 100% real. From the moment he first laid eyes on Lucy, he knew she was special. He’s tried to deny himself the feelings that well up inside, but they tend to come out in overprotective, dominating ways. The result: Lucy hates him or so he thinks.

Lucy is a lynx and like many other cat shifters, her claws come out when challenged. She’s the owner of the town’s coffee shop and pours everything she’s earned into it. There’s a rash of vandalisms, including Lucy’s coffee shop window. Not once but three times, Lucy is targeted. Is someone trying to send her a message or is there a more sinister plot? Before she can tell Damian no, he’s on the case, whether she likes it or not. The more he uncovers, the closer they become to the truth. When the perpetrator attacks Lucy, will Damian be able to save her in time?

This is part of the popular series, That Old Black Magic, but can be read as a standalone.

The Good Griffin is as addictive as a double shot of espresso, only without any of the withdrawal symptoms. While both Damian and Lucy are strong, independent characters, their continuous misunderstandings make them comical and fun. I related to Lucy right away and was, frankly, in awe of Damian. A griffin in a romance? Yes please. The more I read, the more I loved it. The ending had a few surprises I didn’t see coming (thundersnow?). I loved the epilogue and want more!

If you’re looking for a snarky, swoon-worthy paranormal shifter romance, pick this up today! I can’t wait to read more in this series and by McKenzie. Highly recommend!

Favorite Character/Quote: Lucy. I loved her character from the first scene. She’s feisty, independent and cares about others. I can’t imagine what it must’ve been like to be humiliated like that and still hold her head high whenever Damian’s around. Her heart is big as an ocean and I want more stories with her in it.
