Character Interview | Evan and Angel from The Highlander's English Woman by USA Today Bestseller @RuthACasie #historicalromance #bookish

August 26, 2019

Good Evening. I am your host and moderator, Justin Case. In our continuing effort to bring you information about the people depicted in The Stelton Legacy, a fine historical fantasy series well written by Ruth A. Casie, we have something quite unique and exciting this evening. We usually conduct our interviews with a full staff during the day. But this interview is… well, I don’t know where to begin. I’m here in our studio with the minimum of staff and it’s well past our usual workday.

Everyone here is quite excited. No one knows what to expect. Our guests could only spare us a short time and must be on their way by midnight. Can you imagine! Evan and Angel, the murdered couple from Ruth A. Casie’s book The Highlander’s English Woman, are tonight’s guests. They play an important part in the story. They bring Lady Laura and Lord Jamie together.

Oh. The lights are flickering and… they’ve dimmed. Everyone is speaking in whispers. The door. It just opened. I see a mist. It seems to be floating into the studio.  Oh my, you’ won’t believe this. Two people seemed to have materialized out of the air. I… I don’t know what to say. Give me a moment please.

(Justin Case picks up bottle of water with a shaky hand.)

Evan: Good evening, Mr. Case. Angel and I want to thank you for inviting us this evening.

Justin Case: (mopping his brow) I’m very pleased you both could join us. I had no idea what to expect. I mean… you both are… ghosts.

Evan: Yes, sir. We are. But we don’t haunt before midnight or drag chains. You’re quite safe with us.

Angel: Oh, Evan. You’re not helping. Can’t you see the man is upset? (Angel turns to the reporter) Mr. Case, he’s teasing. We’re really very harmless. Why don’t you ask Evan your first question?

Justin Case: (Justin settles himself and gives her a relieved smile)Thank you Angel, or should I call you Sonia?

Angel: My real name is Sonia, but my Da always called me Angel. So did everyone else. So please, call me Angel.

Justin Case: (the reporter nodded then turned to Evan) What was your first impression of Angel?

Evan: I can’t remember not knowing Angel. We grew up with each other. Both our families work for The Maxwell, and a kinder more honest man never roamed the earth. Over all that time I’ve had varying impressions. But I always thought she was steadfast.

Justin Case: I know you love her now. Did you always love her? I mean as a boy.

Evan: As a young boy I didn’t think anything of her other than she was a good friend to go with when I looked for frogs. We always had a comfortable relationship and could tell each other anything.

Angel: Neither of us planned to fall in love. It just happened.

Justin Case: When did it happen?

Angel: The mare was foaling and had a difficult time. No one was near. Evan took care of it all alone. He’s a hero.

Evan: You were with me. You helped, too.

Justin Case: (searching through papers) I don’t have any mention of that here. (searches some more, a bit perplexed)

Evan: It was nothing to record or speak about. The mare’s time came early and the foal wasn’t in the right position. We were in the meadow far from anyone. I watched my father help the mares and had a good idea what needed to be done. I got the mare up and walked her around. The mare did all the work.

Angel: He says it all calm now, but we weren’t calm then. I ran home to tell Da then came back to the meadow Da was a half hour behind. The mare had just lain down to try again. This time the sweet foal had no trouble and arrived without any trouble. We got so excited that we kissed each other. (she bent her heard toward Justin) on the lips (she whispered)

Justin Case: (smiling) And that’s when things changed between you?

(Angel and Evan look at each other deeply)

Angel: It was magical.

Justin Case: (Coughs) You’re very much in love and planned to marry, but you were both killed and became the brunt of ugly rumors.

Angel: Yes. The murderer made it look like Evan killed me then himself. He was trying to cause problems for The Maxwell. Some people were easily led. I wasn’t going to let people think that of Evan.

Justin Case: I understand, Angel that your actions came with very large risks.

Evan: (Evan moved to the end of the seat) She never told me. She never told anyone. It’s not even mentioned in Ms. Casie’s book.

Angel: (quickly turns to face Evan) Let it be, Evan.

Evan: No. I want everyone to know that you were willing to sacrifice and wander the rest of eternity to get to the truth. That’s the most honorable and humbling thing you could have done for me.

Angel: Don’t you understand? If they didn’t bury you in hallowed ground you would be doomed. I would never see or speak to you. It was an easy decision to make. There was no paradise without you. I knew Lady Laura would find the truth. The added benefit she found her soul mate in Lord Jamie. In the end everyone had a happy ever after.

Evan: If they hadn’t—

Angel: But they did. (Evan and Angel were silent for a few long seconds)

Justin Case: I understand that you returned Lady Laura and Lord Jamie’s help in a unique way

Angel: (Bright smile) Their situation was similar to Evan’s and mine. Lord Jamie and Lady Laura had grown up childhood friends, but had trouble getting over that obstacle. That they loved one another was not a question. Everyone could see that, everyone but themselves.

Evan: Lord Jamie was concerned that Lady Laura’s brother would never approve of their relationship. Lady Laura had the same concern.

Justine Case: How did you help? Richard died in the Welsh war.

Angel: After they interred Evan in hallow ground we told them Richard approved of their relationship, gave them his blessing. You should speak to Lady Laura or Lord Jamie. They can tell you so much more.

Justin Case: (studio manager whispers in his ear) Yes, thank you. (the reporter turns toward his guests) I know you must leave before midnight. I wish we had more time.

Angel: Perhaps we can visit you again.

Justin Case: Yes. That would be quite nice. Thank you both for speaking to us. (the reporter turns to the audience). Thank you all for coming this evening. You can find out more about Evan and Angel in The Highlander’s English Woman. Until next time.
