Excerpt:

She should have known.

Naomi cursed under her breath as she walked around the side of the building to the pool, only to hear the sounds of someone already swimming there.

Luca.

She’d forgotten about him. Well, actually she’d been thinking about him all night, wondering what to do with him today, where to take him to see more elephants. She ignored the little voice in her head that insisted it wasn’t the only reason she’d been thinking of him, of his gorgeous body, his lovely smile, his dark eyes… She’d been concentrating on where to take him so much, in fact, that she’d forgotten about the possibility he might swim early this morning.

It was the best time for it, when some stars still twinkled in the lighter blue sky, the ghost of the moon faded, and the birds sang their welcome to the new day.

Damn. It was too late to turn back.

Luca had just finished swimming a length and was leaning on the side of the pool closest to where she was standing.

He was wearing a wicked grin on his handsome face. He’d seen her.

“Buongiorno. What a vision you are, amore.”

His eyes traveled down her body, admiring her usual pink bathing suit and rested momentarily on her pubis before traveling up again to her breasts. The mischievous glint was undisguised as his eyes sought and held hers.

His gaze was so bold and so shocking that she felt heat traveling up her neck despite her best intentions.

What? Was he flirting first thing in the morning? Does the man never stop?

Naomi forced a smile to connect with her face. He was a guest, after all.

“Good morning, Luca. You’re up early.”

“Habit, I’m afraid. Come on in. The water is lovely. Ah, but you probably already know that. I’m guessing you swim every morning, or did you come to join me this morning especially?”

“At the risk of sounding petulant, I’m not even going to answer that.”

Luca pulled such a face of supposed disappointment that Naomi couldn’t help giggling. She shook her flip-flops from her feet, dropped her towel over them, and dived over his head into the pool. She swam underwater for a while before surfacing and swimming freestyle in the opposite direction. But he surprised her by touching the side of the pool next to her at the same time her hand landed there.

“You’re fast.”

Luca’s grin was one of sheer joy.

“I know. I love swimming.”

“And flying…”

He was still grinning, his eyes staying on hers.

“And flying.”

“And driving fast cars?”

His grin became wider as he wiggled his eyebrows at her.

“And driving fast cars.”

“So what’s with the photography? You seem such a man of action otherwise?”

“It’s just one of my hobbies. The other is painting. I told you I love beautiful things.”

She was determined not to fall for his flirting yet again. Yesterday it was new, but now it was old news.

“Like beautiful cars, you mean?”

“I don’t create them myself, unfortunately. There are far more talented men to blame for those. But now and then I get to have some input on color or interior design or something small like that. Not enough to satisfy my creative urges.”

He moved closer to her, his eyes still fixed on hers, a smile emphasizing the contours his designer stubble created on his handsome face. He spoke just above a whisper taking his cue from Naomi in order not to wake the other guests.

“But how about you, amore? What are your hobbies? What stirs your passions?”

Author Biography

Angelina entered this life among the red dunes of Namibia’s deserts. There, where the Milky Way flung it splendour across heaven’s canvas, she found her voice.

As her family traversed the desert in search of crops for their herds of karakul sheep, a childhood filled with strange legends, amazing animals and wonderful people, became her universe.

Music by Mario Lanza and other tenors accompanied them on their travels and called to her soul’s desire to share her voice.

When she left to study with other voice obsessives, it introduced her to a world far beyond her beloved Africa and brought fantastic performance opportunities.

This led to an invitation to Buckingham Palace as a reward, and in recognition of her contribution to the music, culture, and economy of the United Kingdom.

Storytelling, such a big part of her childhood, became an inherent element in her performances, and she never stopped writing down her stories. When, due to illness, she could no longer share her operatic voice as she had, writing became her perfect creative outlet.

She writes contemporary romance to explore love, women's fiction to understand love and middle-grade novels to give love. What more is there than love?

Excerpt:

Naomi followed Santina into the restaurant. But she stopped dead in her tracks in the doorway. Luigi and his staff had completely transformed the restaurant into a tropical garden. Naomi had met Luigi once a week and loved how gregarious and flamboyant he was, the total opposite of  Enzo, his childhood friend. But it was obvious the two had remained close throughout their lives. Luigi shared his Ristorante La Luna and his passion for gardening with Enzo. Fierce gardening rivals, Luigi agreed wholeheartedly that Enzo’s gorgeous home boasted the most beautiful garden Naomi had ever seen. It was the reason Santina had sold her modest home and moved into Enzo’s castle after she and Enzo got married. He couldn’t bear to part from the garden he’d spent years and a fortune creating, and Santina had always loved it, so it was an easy decision for them.

Naomi still couldn’t believe the castle she first saw when Luca drove her home to Modena, belonged to Enzo. It was exactly what she’d always imagined a castle to look like.

Naomi left Santina talking to Luigi and made her way to the toilet at the back of the restaurant. Here, Luigi had placed large potted palm trees and lined the area between the mirrors and the wash basins with mosses and tiny pink flowers. It transformed the usually stylish bathroom into an oasis of serenity.

Just as Naomi closed the door to the cubicle, she heard the bathroom door opening. She could make out the voices of two women, chatting and laughing, friends obviously. They spoke in Italian. Not only could understand what they were saying, but their words weren’t what she’d expected to hear.

“Well, I still don’t get what he sees in that little desert mouse,” Voice One said. “She’s so plain. So unlike who I thought he’d end up with, you know?”

“I know exactly what you mean,” Voice Two said. “She doesn’t even speak the language.”

The women laughed, and Naomi got the impression they weren’t referring to a language that consisted of words.

“Do you remember the last party at his house?” Voice Two asked.

Voice One’s response was delayed and sounded muffled, indicating she was applying lipstick.

“Hmm, how can I forget? I’m sure that party was the reason I got to be his secretary when Santina left.”

She almost purred as the words left her mouth.

“If only all interviews were so interesting and exciting. I’m still waiting for the de-brief if you know what I mean?”

The women laughed again.

“Don’t give up,” Voice Two said. “He’ll soon tire of her and then there you’ll be, ready for your de-brief and whatever else might follow.”

“I know, and I agree,” Voice One said. “It can’t come soon enough. Just imagine…living in that villa, having all that money, having him… And it’s not for lack of trying. It wasn’t easy to find the drugs and when you get them from the internet, you never know if they‘re real, do you? But whatever they were, they worked better than I could’ve imagined.”

The women’s callous laughter clamped a fist around Naomi’s heart.

Voice One snorted as she came to the end of her laughing fit and simultaneously tried to speak.

“By the way, do you like this new top? I got it specially…”

Their voices faded as they left the bathroom and the door shut behind them.

Naomi stood rooted to the spot. She felt as though someone had poured a bucket of ice water over her after punching her in the solar plexus. An immediate headache threatened behind the tears that stung her eyes.
