To Make a Champion Fall, One Must Wound Their Very Soul. . . Charms of the Feykin by @cyallowitz #fa

Title: Charms of the Feykin (Legends of Windemere #11)

Author: Charles E. Yallowitz

Genre: Epic Fantasy

Book Blurb:

To make a champion fall, one must wound their very soul.

Nyx is leading the charge to rescue Delvin and Sari, who have gone missing in the southern jungles of Windemere. Battling through the local predators, the champions are surprised when they reunite in the Feykin city of Rhundar. Instead of captives, the missing heroes have become the city’s rulers and are on the verge of starting a war with those that want to exterminate their new followers. Even with such a noble cause, Delvin and Sari have changed into brutal warlords that may kill each other and their friends long before they step onto the battlefield.

Have Delvin and Sari really changed for the worst or is there a greater threat pulling the champions’ strings?

My Review:

How do you defeat a champion? Take away all that he/she loves and unleash an unholy curse around their heart to prevent them from telling the truth. If they try to break the curse by telling the truth, daggers will pierce their heart and they will die.

The champions have been separated and while Nyx, Luke and the others are searching for Delvin and Sari, they encounter all sorts of trouble. Nyx is struck with visions that aren’t real while Luke is mortally injured. Just when all hope appears lost, they discover Delvin and Sari are not captured but are King and Queen of Rhundar. The champions are reunited, Luke is healed (sort of) but all is not as it appears, especially since Delvin and Sari are warlords hell-bent on destroying a race of people they know nothing about.

Nyx, Luke, Dariana, Timoran and Fizzle know something is not right with their friends. They split up to discover the truth and it’s Nyx who suffers the greatest consequences. Cursed by a deadly entity, she cannot speak the truth or else she will die a horrible death. Will she sacrifice herself to save her friends or will she become another tasty snack to the unknown entity?

This installment in the Windemere series is filled with action, adventure, battles, magic, conflict, betrayal, love, jealousy, warring races and so much more. The action is intense, sometimes gripping. I had audible emotional responses throughout the book and Yallowitz is a master at thrusting the reader inside each character (without head hopping). At the core of Charms of the Feykin, the reader is forced to answer a moral dilemma: if it was a choice of saving those I loved or dying, which would I choose?

This is a blend of The Two Towers, Games of Thrones and Dawn of Wonder (Jonathan Renshaw). It can be read as a standalone and I highly recommend it.

Favorite Character: Nyx. I know I said this the last time I read and reviewed a Windemere book. I connect with Nyx on so many levels. I love how honest she is and how she cares for everyone’s safety first before her own. I cried when she sacrificed herself for her two best friends, even when they didn’t deserve saving (in my opinion). She’s an amazing character and I loved the ending!

Favorite Quote:

“Be thankful that you will get a clean, painless death. I’m sure the other abominations will die in agony.”

My Rating: 4.5 stars

Author Biography:

Charles E. Yallowitz was born, raised, and educated in New York. Then he spent a few years in Florida, realized his fear of alligators, and moved back to the Empire State. When he isn’t working hard on his epic fantasy stories, Charles can be found cooking or going on whatever adventure his son has planned for the day. ‘Legends of Windemere’ is his first series, but it certainly won’t be his last.
