Detours in Time is a fantastic escape that presents many moral dilemmas and surprises on a journey that will either destroy the strongest of friendships or bring two people even closer.

Excerpt:

“3, 2, 1……….” The speedometer hit 90 miles per hour. Milt shifted his gears to overdrive. It was as if they exited one side of the atmosphere and came back in on another. They were there, in Boston, at 4:30 p.m. He parked the Envo close to the original parking spot near the park, behind a tree. One would have to walk right over to that street to get a full view of it in all of its odd glory. It definitely could stick out like a sore thumb if parked in full view.

“We’ll have to walk on the opposite side of the street. We may even have to split up at the coffee shop. One of us can keep watch, the other divert her. We’ll meet up at the theater, because that’s where you’ll convince her to take you. Tell her someone else offered me coffee; I’m inside getting it. How do we keep her from going in to smoke?” Milt’s mind was moving a mile a minute. Pinky almost couldn’t keep up. This whole idea seemed so manic, but she knew why he had to do it. And his mind had to move at this pace for it all to work. She took a deep breath.

“We tell her we want to go to the breakfast shop instead.”

“Are they even open that late?”

“Don’t you remember trying to buy a cigarette for a dimsel? It was about this time.” She pointed to the original breakfast shop where Elise had taken a break to smoke that morning.

“That’s right. Brilliant! Thank you. They seem to be busy all day. I think I’m just nervous. And I hate feeling so unsure.” He stopped and paused for a moment. “Alright. Let’s do this. Right side of the street. Pass by the carnival barker with the drug simulations. Ignore. Hold my hand. Please. Hang on, head down, until we get to the coffee shop. Give me your hair tie again, please.”

“It’s not gonna work if you see yourself!” Pinky exclaimed.

“That’s why we’ll mix in with the crowd at the drug simulation center. We completely avoided that last time. You hated it. Just keep your head down and mix in.”

“Pardon me,” Pinky said to a passerby, a young girl. “Can we trade jackets? I’ll also give you a dimsel.” The girl’s jacket was nothing special, but was of a different color than Pinky’s. She nodded, and they traded quickly, then Pinky put her hair up and knotted it in itself.

Milt could tell it would be hell to let it back down, but that seemed to be of no consequence right now. At least now they were not mirror images.

“I’ll take off the jacket when we see Elise,” Pinky whispered.

“Good thinking, Pinky.” He wrapped his arm around her as they walked, heads down again.

They were passing the drug simulation center. The man stood out front as before, drumming up business, directing people inside, one demo unit outside next to him with a patron inside, trying out the product. People were gathered around. Milt and Pinky squeezed by, staying as close as possible without interacting with the onlookers or the carnival barker.

As they walked past the body modification center, Pinky caught a glimpse of the angel wings again. She kept her distance.

“How about here?” She asked, facing the direction from which Elise would come. Milt stayed by her, but squeezed back into the wedge between the two buildings, right beside Pinky but not quite visible.

Soon, she saw Elise walking down the road, looking left and right, smiling at other passersby, confident beyond her education and years.

“Hello!” She called. Pinky looked behind her, but could not see another Pinky or Milt. She had not yet seen Milt at any rate.

“Hi, Elise. We were hoping you might, be up for a visit to the breakfast shop? That food smelled so good this morning.”

“Well sure! I could get a smoke there,” she said with a smile. “If that’s what you all want.” She linked arms with Pinky.

Milt came out from his hiding spot and put his hand at Elise’s back, directing her back down the street. “Well, there you are! You must be hungry, Poppy. Longing for that greasy food?” She laughed, shaking her whole lean, tall body. Milt tried to hurry their gait along. Back they went through the busy streets.

What’s the first binge-worthy book you read and why was it a must-read?

It was Cujo, by Stephen King. It is a must-read because he makes you care about the characters, and you really want to see them survive. Even the villain starts out as lovable. It all reels you in while toying with your emotions. I could not put it down, but I must warn you, one has to be emotionally strong to take that book.

What makes this a binge-worthy book?

Detours in Time is binge-worthy because it starts in the middle of the action. It develops the main characters, who they are, and where they are, and then things start happening, they find out future secrets, get side-tracked to thirty years before, and then you’ll want to know, just as they do, if they’ve set anything horrible into motion. You’ll care about the characters and even become attached to some of the side characters, who can be quite amusing.

Author Biography:

By day, Pamela teaches Middle School English. By night, she travels to other worlds and times, placing herself in the persona of her characters, all while sitting in her favorite chair. She has enjoyed writing for various reasons ever since childhood, when she realized writing and making up stories would provide entertainment for long trips and keep her company. Her tendency toward fantastic stories was reflected in tales of discovering modern day dinosaurs and talking horses that would give her advice. The writing of poetry provided an outlet for private thoughts and emotions for years until she decided to self-publish fiction in 2016. Pamela's genres include science fiction, paranormal fiction, and poetry of all types. The Made for Me series is Pamela's first published fiction series. She released her first full-length novel, Detours in Time, in the summer of 2017 and the sequel in 2018. Pamela currently juggles her day job with writing further novels in the Detours in Time world while cooking up more ideas for the character of Norrie from her Made for Me series.
