Title: Corporate Undertaker: Business Lessons from the Dead and Dying

Author: Domenic Aversa

Genre: Business Management, Entrepreneurship, Memoir

Book Blurb:

I go to work with a police escort. I am the gatekeeper of the worst behavior by the world’s biggest banks, law firms, and corporations. I’ve overseen the ruin of thousands of companies. Eighty percent of my clients die. I am the Corporate Undertaker. You don’t want to meet me… but many of you will. In this thrilling business memoir, author Domenic Aversa reveals the firsthand account of his messy life as an entrepreneur and corporate crisis manager. For more than 25 years, he has actively assisted companies in dramatic operational transition. During his career, he’s had chairs thrown at his head and guns pointed at his heart. Occasionally, he’s able to pull off a miracle and save a company. Most of the time, he simply tries to ease the agony. This book will show you how to navigate the most difficult stages of your entrepreneurial journey: life, adversity, crisis, death, and rebirth.

My Review:

Have you wondered what happens behind the scenes of a failing business and what a corporate crisis manager does? Corporate Undertaker is part business guide on what not to do and part expose into the seedier side of business. Domenic Aversa has spent almost three decades working all facets of the business world. He’s worked with some of the top companies in the world as well as gone to war with an established bank. This memoir reads like a season of Inside Edition with instances of owners throwing chairs, stealing their own assets and even one who pointed a gun at Domenic’s chest. Domenic shares it all in this engrossing memoir but there’s also incredible lessons aimed at entrepreneurs and business owners along with tasks to follow.

As an entrepreneur, I was intrigued by this book. While I run a small business, I know how difficult it can be to see past the crisis in front of me. I’m always looking for ways to learn from others’ mistakes. Domenic’s experiences, while vastly different from my own, gave me insight and wisdom. Not since first reading Stephen Covey my freshman year in university, have I read such a life-changing, inspiring business book. There’s a lot of truth in Corporate Undertaker but the biggest takeaways for me has to be balancing home and work life. A brilliant book and one I recommend to every single business owner and entrepreneur.
