Secrets and lies did have a way of surfacing at the most inopportune moment. She recalled her visit to Spencer’s apartment. Spencer Sterling III—her fiancé. She worked at the Sterling Art Institute, and the names were no coincidence. Unlike his father, Spencer chose to follow a law career. Although women called him a chick magnet, he’d fallen for her, or so she believed.


Since an attorney kept flexible hours, more often than not, she’d call before popping over to his place, but that particular morning she wanted to show him their wedding invitations. Excited, she turned her key in the lock and entered his apartment.


Spencer’s deep laughter drifted to her ears, and the sound tugged at her heart. What a wonderful laugh. About to call out, she spotted his favorite shirt, the one she’d given to him, turned inside out and discarded on the couch. A lacy, black bra—not hers, lay on a beaded cocktail dress. In a daze, she tripped over a stiletto pump and limped to his bedroom, not wanting to look but knowing she had to.


The affair, he claimed, meant nothing, but his infidelity had crushed her soul and shattered her aspirations. They broke off their wedding plans. She forfeited a small fortune in non-refundable deposits, and a week later, Human Resources let her go—budget cuts, they’d claimed. Yeah, right.
