5 stars for Everleigh’s Game by Kara O'Neal #historicalromance #romance #bookreview

Title: Everleigh’s Game

Author: Kara O’Neal

Genre: Historical Romance

Book Blurb:

Houston, Texas, 1899

Everleigh Camden has upset her mother. She has chosen a profession over marriage. But Everleigh intends to get hitched someday. She just wants some experiences before she settles down, which includes being the secretary to an attorney, and using her winnings from nightly poker games to form the anonymous, charitable persona, “Bets Gamble”.

However, when a new partner joins the law office, he brings his unwelcome ideas and shocking orders to help him catch the Shooter Creek Bandits.

Wade Bennett, sour on marriage and orderly to a fault, moves to Houston with the intent of catching the gang who murdered his brother. Everleigh Camden’s investigative abilities are exactly what he needs to help his quest. He does not need, however, to contend with the alarming attraction he feels toward her. Nor does he have time to refine the sass and vinegar she frequently exudes.

Everleigh’s charms soothe the rips in Wade’s heart, and as they conduct their search, it becomes impossible to ignore his feelings. But villains abduct Everleigh and force her into the game of her life, possibly causing Wade to lose everything he holds dear.

My Review:

Ante up, Everleigh’s Game will steal your heart. With its unconventional heroine, a staunch hero looking to avenge his brother’s death, opposites attract romance, all set in 1899 Texas, Everleigh’s Game is four aces. The action is palpable. The characters are such fun. The romance will sweep you away. I stayed up late reading this book. I couldn’t put it down and neither will you.

Let’s start with the characters. Everleigh is the ultimate heroine. By day, she works in a law office. Come evening, she plays cards and is very good at it. Her love of poker leads her to a new persona and uses her winnings to help those in need. She’s not your average woman and I love that. She’s feisty and speaks her mind. She’s very different from Wade, the new lawyer at her office. Wade is meticulous and has a very stark view on how things should be. He’s investigating a gang of thieves, the same gang who killed his brother. He works closely with Everleigh tracking this gang. The last thing he needs is to fall in love…which is exactly what happens. These two characters are opposite in every way yet they’re perfect for each other. I connected with both and thoroughly enjoyed their banter. The rest of the characters are delightful to read and add so much to the overall story.

The romance is opposites attract with a historical western twist. The banter adds fuel to their attraction. Kara O’Neal writes realistic historical accurate romance. The romance progresses at a nice even pace with splashes or intrigue, danger, and action. I enjoyed it immensely.

I always look forward to reading Kara O’Neal’s books as they are pure escape for me. If you love historical western romance like me, you’ll swoon over Everleigh’s Game.
