Excerpt:

Kian was still preparing her drink but looked up to meet her eyes again. “Working tonight because, well, I am the boss. Co-boss, more accurately. I own this place with my friend and partner, James.”


Sanaa’s face fell in disappointment, which he must have noticed and correctly interpreted. He laughed a bit.


“No, not my romantic or life partner. He’s my business partner. I’m not gay, Sanaa. I’m very straight, believe me.”


Sanaa couldn’t remember the last time she felt so relieved. “I’m a Pasadena native, but I’m embarrassed to say that this my first visit to Java Lava since you opened. Java Lava – I like the name.”


Kian gave her a strange look before smiling again. “Oh, it’s very appropriate in a way that you could never imagine. Nothing like steaming hot coffee. And, there’s nothing hotter than lava. Except, maybe, Hell itself.” He finished the drink and handed it to her over the glass partition. “I like your balloon, Sanaa.”


“And I like you,” she blurted out on impulse. She groaned inwardly. “I mean, I would very much like to share a drink with you. That is, if you’re not busy running things.”


Kian quickly doffed his apron, grabbing a large cup of his own from the back counter. He raised it, winking at her. “Would love to. Got my coffee right here.” He seated them at an empty table near the front of the shop so that he could keep an eye on things. “You seem like a person I should get to know better.”


Sanaa’s heart soared in her chest and her body tingled all over. She was already deeply attracted to Kian but didn’t truly expect it to go anywhere. However, if she could just have this one night…
