Title: Magic in the Mountains (Aspen Glen Series)

Author: Donna Kunkel

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Book Blurb:

Sick and tired of magical men and mayhem, Alex a city witch, pledges to give magic a rest. Her vow is put to the test when she finds herself snowbound with a hunky mortal. She attempts life without magic even when faced with a demonic hen, a cow that acts like a dog, and a dog that acts human. But when all magic breaks loose and a unicorn shows up, it's the last straw. How will she keep her magic a secret? Steve, a reclusive prospector, lives alone in a remote Colorado valley because he doesn't trust himself around humans, especially those of the female persuasion. Once he meets the feisty Alex, breaking self-imposed rules is just the beginning. But how can he keep her safe from what lives inside him? Their connection grows, but the secrets they hide keep them from confessing their feelings. Will they be able to accept and control who and what they are in time to give their love a chance?

My Review:

City witch Alex is giving up magic, due to her dealings with some very trying wizards. So when she ends up stranded in a cabin with sexy human prospector Steve, her promise to not use magic is put to the test. It’s getting harder to deny her attraction to Steve and even harder to not use her natural magic abilities, especially when she encounters a demonic hen, a cow that acts like a dog, and a dog that acts human. When a unicorn arrives, she hits her limit. But Steve has secrets too, even though she can’t ferret out what his secrets are. Will these two scarred souls accept one another when the magic is unleashed and realize how strong their love can be or will they crash and burn?

Magic in the Mountains is an unusual paranormal romance. From the beginning, I was drawn into the story with very descriptive narration. I connected with Alex right away and I enjoyed her vivacity. Steve, on the other hand, is a tortured hero and his complexity drew me to him. The romance moves at a good pace with a fair share of angst. The plot, though, seems to go at a good clip then stall over parts of the story. A little less description and more action/emotion/dialogue would work better. What I loved most was the magical realism plus the animals. Who doesn’t love a story with a unicorn in it? If you love paranormal romance, pick up Magic in the Mountains. Are you looking for an escape? If so, you’ll be transported to the Colorado mountains in Magic in the Mountains.
