Genre: Thriller, Suspense, Romantic Suspense

Publisher: iUniverse

Book Blurb:

Political intrigue meets romantic suspense in this high-stakes, split-narrative thriller that follows entrepreneur Ben Johnson as he sets out to find the man responsible for the attempted murder of his lifelong love, Acadia LaFleur.

“The SCOTUS Affair” weaves in a compelling, emotional love story between star-crossed lovers. After a secret affair spanning decades almost ends the tragic death of Acadia, Ben stops at nothing to find the man responsible for sending her down a flight of stairs and into a life-threatening coma. The racial and financial differences and familial obligations that keep them apart complicate Ben’s attempts to protect her and, ultimately, come to a head as Ben discovers her own family is tied up in the incident as they leverage their political power for personal gain.

With the help of his PI friend, Dimase Augustin, Ben risks his own life to ensure justice is served to his life-long love, and his dedication and persistence demonstrate that love is both the greatest motivator and most powerful force in the face of evil.

Excerpt:

Alone in the back of the cab, Ben Johnson removed the worn forty-year-old piece of paper from his wallet. He tenderly unfolded it and laid it on his thigh. His finger gently caressed the shaded area. Forty years of separate lives and shared love. His expression hardened. No matter what it took, he would find out who had hurt his Acadia. He owed her that.

The driver dropped Ben right in front of 161 Berkley Street, at the entrance to Grille 23. As was his habit, Ben was five minutes early for his noon lunch meeting. In the twenty-four hours since he’d received the devastating news about Acadia, his emotions had run the gamut. Now he was determined to find out what really had happened, and there was only one person he trusted enough to ask for that kind of help.

The maître d’ escorted Ben to his usual table in a secluded corner of the restaurant. It was no surprise to Ben that Dimase Augustin was already there, seated at the table, waiting patiently. Punctuality was one of the many qualities Ben admired about Dimase.

Dimase had emigrated with his parents from Haiti when he was ten years old. In his professional life, after six years spent with US Army Special Forces, Dimase had risen through the ranks at Cambridge PD, ultimately serving as the head of homicide investigations for several years. Ben admired the man’s passion, sharp mind, and unparalleled work ethic, attributes they had in common, which served to strengthen the bond between them. Recently, Dimase had retired from the Cambridge PD and set up shop with Bill Larson, a forensic psychologist and former detective with the FBI. According to their website, Augustin and Larson Confidential LLC specialized in sensitive investigations, security consulting, corporate counterespionage, and government contracting.

Dimase rose to greet him, and the two embraced warmly. Dimase was one of the few who knew about Ben and Acadia.

“What is it, my friend?” Dimase asked. “You look upset. Something has happened. What?”

Ben brought Dimase up to speed on the phone call from Amandine and the sequence of events leading to Acadia currently being in a coma. “For obvious reasons, I can’t be with her right now. I need to know what happened. Who did this to her, and why? I need you to go down there. I need you to make sure she is safe and getting the best care, and I need to know who is responsible. Will you do this for me?”

Dimase reached across the table and took his friend’s hand in his own. “You know I will do this for you. I promise you we will get to the bottom of it. I will leave tomorrow.”
