Title: The Wallflower, the Rake, and the Masquerade

Author: Alanna Lucas

Genre: Regency Romance, Historical Romance

Book Blurb:

After years of being treated as a little more than a servant, Portia Lamont overhears her half-siblings plotting to send her to Town and marry her off. Since she has a paltry dowry and little else to offer a prospective husband, she wonders if she’ll even find a half-decent match, someone who’ll share her love of intellectual pursuits.

Titus Beaumont, Lord Ravensworth, is an unwilling participant in this year’s Season. All his adult life, he’s managed to avoid marriage, becoming a seasoned rake because he dares not risk his heart again. However, at his aunt’s insistence, he must attend for his cousin’s entrance into Society.

In the ton’s hectic marriage mart, Portia is considered a wallflower, an experience made even more vexing when she catches sight of Titus, her beloved childhood companion—the boy who once told her, I will always be your friend, no matter what happens. But when she was sent away after her father’s death, she never heard from him again. And time, a ruthless master, has not improved her circumstances. It seems he still wants nothing to do with her.

Except at a masquerade, when he doesn’t recognize her behind her mask and kisses her…

Sometimes the best revenge is just being yourself.

My Review:

Portia is used to being a wallflower but one kiss at a masquerade has her heart all aflutter for Titus, her childhood friend. Can she convince her odious relations Titus is the only man she’d marry? The Wallflower, the Rake, and the Masquerade is a sweeping Regency romance featuring childhood friends, heaps of misunderstandings, and a love to heal all rifts. While reading, I definitely got a Cinderella vibe. The characters are engaging and are historically accurate. The romance will take your breath away. Alanna Lucas has penned another unputdownable read.

Let’s start with the characters. My heart connected with Portia right away. Her relations are insufferable and treat her terribly. I wanted to set them down but alas, Portia has a forgiving spirit. Her emotions are honest and made me love her more.

Titus is a rake but for all the wrong reasons. He assumes women are there to hurt him, so he takes the reins in order to protect his heart. So much pain in his life, he goes through an emotional roller coaster ride. Alanna Lucas writes his viewpoint with a sympathetic tone. What he needs is a good talking to.

The rest of the characters are well-written and fill out the story nicely.

I must admit, I read this in one day. The writing is immersive and addictive. The descriptive narration and setting drew me into the story. The historical accuracy is flawless. I loved every minute of it and didn’t want it to end.

Fans of Erica Ridley will love this Regency romance.
