Author: Brenda Kerr

Genre: Romantic Suspense

Book Blurb:

A former Legionnaire.

A thrilling romance.

Siobhan Healy is a survivor. Betrayed by her fiancé, she sees a promising career as a police officer erased by scandal.

Now, five years later, she’s found a new life as an elite bodyguard for Legio Security, willing to risk death to protect her principals.

An on-the-job injury leads to a change in assignment, one that brings Siobhan in much closer contact with her boss, Patrick Coyle, whose mysterious past and brooding good looks present a different kind of danger.

Patrick Coyle is a man driven to succeed. He has built Legio Security into one of the most elite security firms in Europe, with a reputation for accomplishing any mission, no matter how difficult. For the right price. He’s not about to let himself be distracted by Siobhan’s quick wit and good looks, no matter how tempted he is.

When an old Legion buddy reaches out and asks for help, Patrick is quick to respond.

Now Patrick and Siobhan find themselves locked in a battle with forces more powerful than they have ever imagined.

This isn’t the usual security job. This is a war.

One that Siobhan and Patrick have no intention of losing.

Can they beat the odds and survive against an enemy who seems to have all the advantages? Or will this be the mission that ends not only their lives but their blossoming love?

Excerpt:

By two-thirty that afternoon, Siobhan and Sarah were walking out of the front doors of the hotel. Denny, the head of the security detail, pointed at a white Mercedes Benz limousine. “The radio station sent a car. We’ll follow in the SUV.”

Siobhan turned to walk around the front of the car while the doorman opened the passenger side for Sarah. She was just rounding the front of the vehicle when she heard a soft zapping noise. Turning, she saw Denny drop to the ground, twitching. The doorman shoved Sarah into the car before diving in after her and slamming the door. The driver stomped on the gas, forcing Siobhan to jump onto the hood. She sprawled across the slick metal surface, grabbing onto the windshield wipers in a desperate attempt to avoid being thrown off. The driver accelerated around the roundabout and headed towards the main entrance. Siobhan saw Sarah struggling in the rear passenger seat with the doorman, who had pulled out a pistol and aimed it at the young star. Siobhan gripped the wiper as hard as she could with her left hand and reached behind her for the pistol she carried with her right. She aimed at the driver, squeezing off three shots. The driver’s head bounced back, and Siobhan saw Sarah scream as blood and brains sprayed across the back seat. The out-of-control car spun into a skid. Siobhan lost her grip, being tossed to the pavement, where she rolled awkwardly. The limousine slammed into an ornate concrete pillar and stopped. The rear passenger door flew open and the doorman climbed out, dragging Sarah with him. He pulled her in front of him as a human shield, aiming his pistol at the security detail running from the hotel, guns drawn.

Siobhan raised her pistol and aimed at the doorman. Exhaling slowly, she squeezed the trigger. As always, the sound of the gunshot was a surprise. Blood erupted from the kidnapper’s head, and his body slumped to the ground like a marionette whose strings had been cut. Sarah screamed as she was pulled down by the weight of the dead man’s body. The security detail immediately scooped her up and carried her back up the driveway and into the hotel. Siobhan tried to stand but immediately collapsed, screaming as pain shot through her left knee.

“Drop the weapon!”

Sarah rolled over and saw a Singapore Police Force officer aiming a rifle at her. She carefully placed her pistol on the ground and slid it towards the officer.

Within moments, the front of the Hotel Raffles was swarming with police and emergency vehicles. The paramedics quickly secured Siobhan to a backboard, completely immobilizing her neck and spine. As they lifted her onto the gurney, Siobhan heard raised voices. Sarah leaned into her field of view. Someone had gotten her a damp towel to wipe some of the gore from the singer’s face and hair, though she still wore the same silk top as she had when she left, with it now stained with blood.

“My god, Sarah. Are you okay?”

Sarah burst into tears. “Thank you, Siobhan. You are my guardian angel. You saved me.”

Siobhan waved awkwardly. Reggie replaced Sarah in Siobhan’s view. “Denny’s okay. He got zapped with a stun gun but is awake now. He’s refusing to go to the hospital. He says he’ll be fine and be over to see you as soon as he finishes dealing with the police.”

The paramedics loaded Siobhan into the back of the ambulance, and Siobhan heard the doors shut. She closed her eyes as she felt the tears come.

My costume this Halloween would be James Bond.

Explain why your featured book is a treat to read:

I don’t like romance novels with female protagonists who are damsels waiting to be rescued. I write novels with women who are equals, capable of rescuing themselves if necessary.
