What makes this book a must-read and/or what inspired you to write this story:
They say history is written by the winners, but I wanted to write a fresh version of history, giving a voice to the outsiders, including the animals teetering on the extinction precipice. So I began the Tasmanian Tales trilogy. Fortune’s Son (Book 1) begins in 1880s Hobart and is the story of Luke Tyler, a man unjustly condemned to prison in his youth, and of Isabelle Campbell, the girl he has loved since a child. This is an epic story, filled with adventure, heartbreak and enduring love.
However, it wouldn’t be one of my books if animals didn’t play an important part. Fortune’s Son also tells the story of one of the last thylacines (Tasmanian tigers) soon to disappear from the Earth after a twenty-five-million-year reign. There is almost no historical fiction about the thylacine. I think it’s time to fill the gap.
Another great reason to read Fortune’s Son is that it is currently 99 cents, to celebrate the release of The Lost Valley -- Book 2 in the Tasmanian Tales trilogy.
