Excerpt

Nerves, nerves, nerves. Corey slightly turned her head to stare at the incredibly handsome guy driving her into town. She hadn’t dated or been alone with a man in over five years.

“You seem a million miles away,” he said.

“Oh, I’m sorry. I was just...” She placed her hands in her lap.

“I’m taking you to my favorite restaurant.” He tossed a glance her way. “It just re-opened after a couple of years of being closed. You will love the dessert.”

“Sounds very nice.”

After a deep breath, he glanced her way, “You look so beautiful tonight.”

“Thank you.” She was impressed with the obvious confidence he exuded. He maneuvered his SUV with ease through the wet streets. “I know this is a very personal question, but why didn’t you ever marry?”

“It’s a long story.”

She flinched at his clipped tone. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have gone there.”

“It’s okay. I don’t like to talk about my relationships.”

“Relationships?” Oh no! What had she gotten herself into? “Let’s change the subject.”

“I’ll put it this way. I haven’t found the right person yet.” He laughed. “I’ve asked two women to marry me. The first girl broke it off when she found out I was in seminary school. The second, well, how can I tell you? She could not remain faithful throughout our engagement.”

Did he think she’d be the right one? With her hands in her lap, she wondered what kind of man he really was? His looks would make a girl melt just being near him. Is there something deep down he’s not sharing because, from where she was sitting, any single woman her age would jump at an opportunity to date him. “I can’t seem to figure you out, Preacher.”

A frown surfaced upon his face. “What do you mean?”

“You are so handsome, I would think women would be knocking down your door to date you.” She tossed her head in his direction.

He cleared his throat. “I don’t understand why you think of me as something special.”
