It's a sad day for librarian Nina Foster when she discovers her good friend, bookstore owner Wildeen Bergman, dead on her office floor. Worse yet, another friend, romance writer Zelma Duke, becomes the police's prime suspect. Nina knows Wildeen had something on Zelma. Was it enough to warrant murder? Handsome Stephen Kraslow, owner of the local newspaper, joins forces with Nina to find out the truth. The quest takes them on a dangerous journey of twists and turns before they reach the final outcome.
Nina opened the door to Bergman Books, New and Used, and stepped inside. Wildeen’s office looked as though it had been hit by a hurricane. Cupboard doors hung open, and desk drawers lay on the floor, their contents scattered from one end of the room to the other….
Her gaze landed on a person’s leg sticking out from behind the desk. A leg wearing a green stocking, the foot a black flat. Nina picked her way through the debris and peered around the desk.
Wildeen lay on her stomach, one arm curled under her body, the other outstretched. Her head had a large gash behind her left ear. Her hair was blood-matted, and dried blood stained her face and her yellow sweater. More blood had soaked into the bare wooden floor.
Near Wildeen’s outstretched left hand lay a glass horse figurine, one of her prized antique bookends. Blood covered the horse’s uplifted hooves.
Nausea churned Nina’s stomach, while her thoughts raced. Call 9-1-1 and then check for a pulse. Maybe she was still alive.
But, as she pulled out her cell phone, her gaze fell on Wildeen’s hand. The palm, pressed to the floor, was a mottled purple, while the back was pale white.
No need to check for a pulse. Most certainly, Wildeen Bergman was dead.
