Excerpt

Toppled furniture was scattered across the room. Broken crockery littered the floor. Embers knocked out of the hearth smoldered. The last pages of parchment turned to ash.

“You fight well for your size.” The pirate and his target waited in the center of the great hall. Each stood their ground, unwilling to yield. Screams and cries echoed outside.

“Put down your weapon. You can’t best me. Do you know who I am? Gareth, although you may call me MacAlpin. A name that is feared along the Scottish coast.”

Silence.

The intruder thrust his sword, but the strike was well blocked and rewarded with an answering blow so hard the pirate’s eyes widened.

Over confident. That made the defender smile.

The intruder swung wildly to try to catch his opponent any way he could.

And over eager.

“Desperate. And desperate people make mistakes,” Father’s voice echoed. “Be patient. Wait for an opening.”

Father, bless his memory was a good soldier and teacher, his lessons learned and technique well practiced.

Conserve your strength. Even though your weapon is well-balanced, you can tire quickly. Study your opponent. Identify that slight movement in the eye, the mouth, the foot or hand that forewarns you he is about to strike. There is a heartbeat between his silent signal and his action. That is when you attack. That is your advantage.

This man’s silent signal was a combination of widening eyes and the slight movement of his right foot before he sprang forward.

Sword fights were quick, over and done enabled soldiers to move to their next target, but not this one. This was a waiting game.

The pirate’s eyes widened and the thrust of his sword was met with a block. Again he attacked and again he was stopped.

A whistle sounded from outside.

“Come away.” A man with a familiar voice entered and broke her concentration. De Montfort. He was here several days before she buried her father.

The pirate aimed the tip of his blade at her heart.

“One moment.” He never looked away. “You are fortunate, today.”

He lowered his weapon in a false salute then grabbed the jewel pin holding her cloak.

“My prize…” His mouth gaped open as the cloak dropped and revealed the curves of a woman in a man’s shirt and britches.

In one quick movement, she sliced the air catching his cheek.

“A kiss to remember me by,” Moira said.

The whistle sounded again, this time more panicked and shrill.

“Now. Someone comes. You mustn’t be seen here.”

The intruder, gripping his sword hard enough to turn his knuckles white hurried away.

Moira didn’t move. She waited for her heart beat to slow. In the heat of the fight, she went through the prescribed motions as if she were training. Only the fight mattered. Emotion was just as much her enemy as the pirate. Strike after strike she defended then moved to offense. Now with the fight over she let the emotions consume her. She sagged onto a nearby stool, her sword across her lap. Her stomach in knots, her morning meal threatened to spew up. Never did she face a true adversary. She only trained with her father.

“Moira,” A man called and barged into the room.

She jumped to her feet, her blade poised and ready. The man came to an abrupt halt.
