"What?" she gasped. “But you don’t understand. I have to get there.” She gripped the counter with her free hand, holding on for dear life. “I can’t stay here. I...I...” The words wouldn’t come. She couldn’t say it, yet she had to make him understand. “My husband...”


A man pushed his way to her side, a man in a uniform. “I have orders to report to Camp Atterbury, Indiana. And she’s going home to stay with her sick mother, isn’t that right, dear?”


Rosemary looked up into soft green eyes peering from beneath bushy brows. He nodded ever so slightly and for some odd reason she instinctively trusted him.


“Aren’t you supposed to give priority to the military?” he continued in an authoritative tone.


The clerk looked from the soldier back to her. “Are you...together?”


She nodded emphatically, intentionally raising her left hand to expose the gold band. If she didn’t go along with this man, she’d be waiting here for almost a week.


“Well, in that case,” the clerk stammered. “Let me see.”


The man searched his schedules. The sight of a uniform certainly changed his attitude.


“Let’s see now, madam, do you want to accompany your husband all the way to Indiana? Then go south to Tennessee? Or would you mind parting ways a bit earlier? In Chicago?”


She looked up again into that kind, gently smiling face. A nice face. She prayed she could trust him.

Her fascination with stories about World War II led her to write about couples finding love during that tumultuous time.
