“This is farming. Sometimes it pours and sometimes the sun shines. Your grandmother has a lot of grit and so do you. That’s what it takes to bring River Saint back around. But honestly, we need to get on the same page.”


“August…”


“Wait. What we did the other night, I shouldn’t have made a move like I did. We’re both here to help Isobella.”


Her cheeks flushed. “I understand, it’s just…”


“You can tell me. I wear big boy pants,” he encouraged although he felt a hitch in his chest. No one wanted to be on the end of rejection.


“What happened wasn’t your fault. We were both there and both wanted it. I was caught off guard after.” She lowered her gaze for a second and when she looked back up, she wore a small smile. “I hadn’t expected you to be so…capable.”


“Capable?” Had he heard right?


“Good.”


“At least we’re heading in the right direction.


Her smile erupted into laughter. “I wouldn’t want you to get a big head, but it was wonderful.”


“Remind me to never use you as a reference. Back on topic, I’m not apologizing for my feelings, only that I went in like a starving man with tunnel vision.” He pushed away from the counter and stepped close to her. “I’m not going to hide from my feelings for you, but I will respect the fact that I have to use better tact the next time.”


“The next time?” She lifted a brow over twinkling eyes.


“Am I being presumptuous again?”


“Slightly.” She nibbled on the corner of her lips.


“I can’t seem to help myself when I’m near you. Don’t worry though, it won’t keep me from cracking the whip?”


Her cheeks flushed. “A whip? Are there chains too?”


“You do have a naughty side, don’t you?”


“I haven’t always been uptight. I guess I’m finding myself slowly.”


“Great, because it’s important for you to be a part of every aspect of the farm. Work starts at sunrise. I’ll see you then.”


“Sunrise?”


He was amused at her wide stare. “Don’t worry. If you’re lucky, you’ll have a chance to catch a cat nap later in the afternoon. This is how we get on the same page and help Isobella. Are you in?”


With a sliver of hesitation, she nodded. “I’m in.”
