Genre Romantic Mystery

Book Blurb

In New Orleans, secrets don’t stay buried—and neither do old, cold sins…

Madeline Baker thrives on order. By day, she runs the front desk at Baker Boys Investigations; by night, she’s mystery author S.C. Fitz-Dankworthington—her best-kept secret. She’s got a deadline looming and no time for danger or romance.

Then Quinn Ellery walks in, seeking her alter ego. His neighbor—another S.C. Fitz-Dankworthington—has been murdered, and he’s convinced it’s no coincidence. Soon after, his grandmother ropes Maddie into solving a 60-year-old killing—until someone tries to blow Gammie up and nearly takes them out instead.

Caught in a deadly web of family lies and long-buried truths, Maddie and Quinn race to unravel the past before it buries them too. In the Big Uneasy, murder and mayhem simmer with romance, gumbo, and secrets too close to home.

Excerpt

It was early, it was quiet, and she might be able to get some time for her own side hustle before her brothers arrived. But before she could open that file, an alert popped up.

She had several special ones that helped her keep track of outside events that might impact her or her clients.

This particular alert surprised her. It was not one she’d expected to ever get.

“Mysterious Death of Local Hermit”

She frowned and clicked the link. The article was from The Plonkville Daily, a small-town newspaper. It had, apparently, taken a few days to hit the search engines because the article was a couple of days old and scant on details.

Local hermit, Solice Circuit Fitz-Dankworthington was found dead early Friday morning. Police are investigating.

The implication that there was a police force would have normally made her smile. She’d been to Plonkville once. Its “force” consisted of a chief and a deputy—both who had other jobs to make ends meet. There was a mayor who had expressed conventional sorrow at the loss.

And that was it.

The next alert had more detail—troubling detail.

Bestselling Author Found Dead in Home?

Was the recently deceased hermit actually the bestselling author, S. C. Fitz-Dankworthington?

Maddie managed to find space for both elbows to rest on either side of her laptop. Well, that explained the alert.

A call came through her laptop set up, this for her own business.  The number was unknown. She hesitated. She usually didn’t answer unknown calls on this particular number, but…she glanced at the headline and then took the call.

She heard a male voice identifying himself as a police officer and asking if he was speaking to M. Baker, literary agent for Mr. Fitz-Dankworthington.

His tone sounded pained, as if saying the name actually hurt and her lips twitched.

“Literary attorney,” Maddie corrected, automatically. Her first instinct had been to stall and play assistant to herself, but probably not a good idea to do to an officer of the law. If he was who he said he was? It’s not like she could check his ID while they were on the phone.

Authors had tried all kinds of dodges to get in touch with her since she’d hung up her virtual shingle as a literary attorney.

A hint of impatience entered the voice. “You’re hard to track down, ma’am.”

“Yes.” She didn’t apologize. She’d done it on purpose, and it was nice to know it had worked so well. With a family like hers, keeping your head down was both a genetic instinct and an imperative if one had secrets.

“I’m surprised you haven’t been in touch,” the voice pressed on, the annoyance factor rising.  “Since your client is dead.”
