Title: That Monroe Girl

Author: Ilona Fridl

Genre: Historical Western Romance

Book Blurb:

Cat Monroe arrives in Tombstone, Arizona searching for her father and brothers, who left Virginia for the West after the Civil War. With the help of newspaper reporter Jake Spencer, she finds her family and a whole peck of trouble. She's falling for the newspaperman, but she discovers his family and hers are feuding over water rights. When her father finally accepts that she is his daughter, he wants to marry her off to a rich neighbor who has a dark past.

Scandal and murder are catching her in a snare―Who can she possibly trust in a town too tough to die?

Excerpt:

The priest’s hand grasped hers. “You’re new here. You are?”

“Catherine. I arrived in town this week.”

He clapped Daniel on the shoulder. “I haven’t seen you here for a while. Are you escorting the young lady?”

Daniel hesitated. “Her and her companion, Edna.”

The priest greeted Edna. “Welcome to you, too. Do you plan to stay long?”

Edna glanced at Cat. “Perhaps.”

The three stood to the side waiting for the Monroes to come out. Albert Monroe stalked toward them with a scowl. “What do you mean, bringing your women to church? Have you no shame?”

Anger clouded Daniel’s features. “As usual, you don’t know what you’re talking about, Pa. She claims to be your daughter, Catherine Monroe, and I believe her!”

Albert whirled on her. “You’re the one who came by last week with the Spencer boy?”

Cat opened and closed her mouth, then said, “Yes.”

“Lady, I don’t know what you’re trying to pull, but it won’t work. I sent you the letter to the hotel about my daughter.”

“But you’re wrong! I have proof.”

She handed him the tintype. “This is my mother, Lettie Monroe.” A folded paper came out of her reticule next. “Here’s my record of birth.”

He thrust them back at her. “Anyone could have gotten these.”

Daniel cut in. “Pa, she knew my middle name!”

Albert turned on him. “She could have gotten that where she got the picture and record.”

She tearfully retrieved the picture that had slipped to the ground. “I did! From my Uncle Leland and Aunt Camille. They raised me!”

“Then why did I get a letter from Camille telling me my daughter had died?”

Horror filled her soul. “I don’t know.”
