Title: The Reiver’s Cub

Author: Laura Strickland

Genre: Historical Scottish Romance

Book Blurb:

Ten years ago, Bess Mowatt promised to guard her newborn cousin from his father, Aleck Maxwell. Called the Reiver Wolf, Maxwell is the scourge of the Scottish marches, and no fit guardian for a child. But when the keep where Bess and the boy live suddenly comes under Maxwell's protection, she has nowhere to hide.

Aleck doesn't quite believe the tale he was told, that his son died at birth. His head tells him one thing, and his heart another. While protecting the keep from marauders, he makes a connection with Bess's young charge. But Bess stands in the way, a woman who is also a warrior, a protector who needs his protection. Can he persuade this fiery woman to accept his help? Will a lie told long ago stand in the way of their love?

My Review:

Bess Mowatt made a promise to hide her cousin’s newborn son from his reiver father, the ruthless Maxwell. Ten years later, Bess had achieved that and more. Dexter is a fine lad and tucked away from prying eyes. That is, until Maxwell shows up claiming to hold the deed to the very lands both she and Dexter call home. She’s a fierce warrior, well trained, and will do anything in her power to keep the Reiver Wolf (another name for Maxwell) away from his own son. What she’s unprepared for is Maxwell’s love. Can she set aside her hatred for him and make a true family for Dexter or will she wind up alone or even dead?

The Reiver’s Cub is a Scottish historical romance set in the wild borderlands. Laura Strickland, once again, brings history to life with her descriptive narration. Every nuance, from the language to the food to even the dress, draws the reader in. The romance is subtle in the beginning but burns hot as the plot progresses. There’s plenty of action in The Reiver’s Cub which moves the plot at a solid pace. I naturally clung to Bess and her emotions, especially when it came to the wretched Maxwell. I didn’t like him throughout most of the book but by the end, he won me over. If you’re looking to be swept away to rugged Scotland, you’ll love The Reiver’s Cub. A feast for historical romance readers who love a strong, independent heroine. Highly recommend!

Author Biography:

Multi-award-winning author Laura Strickland delights in time traveling to the past and searching out settings for her books, be they Historical Romance, Steampunk or something in between. Her first Scottish Historical hero, Devil Black, battled his way onto the publishing scene in 2013, and the author never looked back. Nor has she tapped the limits of her imagination. Venturing beyond Historical and Contemporary Romance, she created a new world with her ground-breaking Buffalo Steampunk Adventure series set in her native city, in Western New York. Married and the parent of one grown daughter, Laura has also been privileged to mother a number of very special rescue dogs, and is intensely interested in animal welfare. These days while she's writing, you can always find her latest rescue, Lacy, nearby. Her love of dogs, and her lifelong interest in Celtic history, magic and music, are all reflected in her writing. Laura's mantra is Lore, Legend, Love, and she wouldn't have it any other way.
