“Have you been out all night?”
“Shit!” Alyssa jumped and clutched her chest. “Grams, you startled me. What are you doing sitting here in the dark?”
Grandma patted the chair next to her. “Come sit down.”
Alyssa gritted her teeth. This was what she’d hoped to avoid. Her face heated, and she plopped down, crossing her hands over her chest.
“You look like you did when I wouldn’t let you go to that all-night party by the river when you were sixteen. Stop pouting. I simply want to talk.”
Sitting up straighter, she uncrossed her arms and rested them on the table. “I’m sorry.” Her grandmother deserved better than a spoiled child.
“I’ve seen the sparks between you two. Spending the night with him was inevitable, but I’m worried you’ll get your heart broken.” Her grandmother reached over and placed her hand on Alyssa’s.
“I won’t. I know this is only temporary.”
“Temporary doesn’t mean your heart won’t get involved. He’s told us many times, he needs to leave next week. Besides that, he hasn’t shared much about his life. Who knows? He could have a wife and kids somewhere.”
“It’s why I’m keeping my heart guarded.”
Her grandmother squeezed her hand then stood and placed a kiss on top of her head. “Just be careful.”

Growing up in a small town, Melissa created stories in her head and lived them out with her sisters. They climbed through the quarries, built forts among the leaves and pretended they were their favorite television heroines.

Her books are filled with broken heroes and heroines who overcome real-life obstacles and come out stronger than ever. Her children books (written under her childhood name- Missy Watling) feature endearing tales infused with important lessons about self-acceptance.
