With the big sale this week on my Destiny Paramortals series I decided to share a few of my favorite short snippets from my favorite characters in the series. (All six books in the series are on sale this week on Amazon May 30- June 5 and available for free with kindle unlimited
From Storm Crazy (Tempe)
Tempe
“If you asked real nice, I’d help you with that.”
I dragged the box off the edge of the pickup and lugged it slowly up each step as Dick watched, a mean smirk on his face. I thought, stay away from me, just as I felt the pinch on my butt. I whirled. The corner of the box hit Dick in his considerable belly causing me to lose my grip. Ok, so maybe I uncurled my fingers a wee bit. The box upended, slamming down onto the floor.
“Yowww!” Too bad, Dick’s foot was between the package and the floor. Oh, well... Dick struggled to pull his foot out from under the box. “You bitch! I’m calling the cops.”
“Suit yourself,” I said. “Meantime, hold it right there while I scan the confirmation.” I aimed the scanner at the barcode and heard the bleep as it registered the delivery. “Allllrighty then. Have a good day.”
I smiled sweetly and started for the door, but it was blocked by a familiar figure. Not now. Not now. I stomped my foot down and huffed out a breath.
“Ms. Pomeroy,” Sheriff Lang tipped his hat with a lifted eyebrow that asked, you again?
My thoughts exactly. “Sheriff.”
Livia Quinn: I love Tempe’s feisty attitude and the way she cares about everyone in her life. She’s dealing with her impending quickening the only way she knows how – denial. It keeps her a bit on the edge. That and the fact that her brother is missing—she practically raised him by herself since she was ten. Jack just thinks she’s a trouble magnet. He’s right. I just wish I could have handled a couple of my mail customers like she did here, lol.
Cry Me a River (Jane Fortune, gossip columnist, 1-900 Psychic, grocery clerk)
Dressed in cheap purple taffeta, under a backdrop of glittering stars, crescent moons and happy suns was Jane, armed with her psychic paraphernalia, large print tarot cards and “gazing” ball which was plugged into the wall with a striped extension cord.
Yeah. Very mystical. I pointed to the nameplate in front of Jane. “Look.” Montana snickered.
Jane’s hand-printed card read: Have your Fortune told by a real Psycho.
Livia Quinn: Not only is Jane not a psychic but her columns are riddled with malapropisms. She’s so fun to write and who doesn’t love a nosy gossip?
Eve of Chaos (Conor, the dragon knight)
“Montana whispered, “I want to ride your dragon.”
Conor’s chin dropped; both eyes flashed then reduced to gold slits, as they’d done in his dragon form, but the heat receded when he got her true meaning. He grumbled, “This is not a carnival, and I am not your carousel horsey.”
Montana waved her hand. “Well, don’t get all offended like. I’ve just been daydreaming about seeing Destiny from the back of a magnificent fire-breathing dragon such as yourself, but…” she shrugged. “I’m sure you’re not the only dragon in the sky.”
Livia Quinn: You can imagine an arrogant, centuries old Scottish dragon’s response. It’s been delightful messing with Conor and getting him to relax that old world reserve. And my Dinnshencha warrior goddess, Montana, is not intimidated. She’s always challenging him. They’re perfect for each other.
Blame it on the Moon (Jack)
Jack
I sent Montana a text:
Trouble at Bon Amis. Get here. Bailey in trouble. And about Liam, what is he? Right now, I wasn’t worried about whether my phone records would be reviewed. Montana apparently wasn’t either.
Her text read: Vamp. On my way.
Livia Quinn: I can just hear Jack, now, can’t you? What?! Even in book 4, ex-Navy pilot Jack Lang still has to pinch himself. He thought he’d picked a perfectly normal little southern town to raise his teenager, like Mayberry. Wrong. For a man who came to Destiny thinking reality and choices were mostly black and white, his true colors will show up when his own reality changes. But I think he’s up for the challenge.
Take These Broken Wings (Inez and Mr. Jackson)
Tempe
What was Inez saying? Mr. Jackson was in his eighties. "Are we talking about the same person—ex-postal carrier whose favorite pasttime was reading me the riot act every day over some minor infraction in the mail code?"
Inez said, "Well, he's changed since you zapped the life back into him."
"Um, I—"
"There's no question in my mind, Tempest Pomeroy." Her eyes narrowed and her voice rose, "That little tattoo of a redhead on his chest is proof that you rejuvenated him. He's like a alpha rabbit on Viagra. He's going to send me across that mortal bridge before my time if something isn't done."
I was horrified. "Please don't say that, Ms. Inez. Maybe this is just temporary."
"Oh, it's temporary all right, 'cause you're gonna fix it."
Huh? "How?"
Livia Quinn: True love looks the same whether you’re tthirteen or ninety and I was thrilled to give Inez and Phineas their happy ever after. Wait til you see how.
Blood Moon (Conor’s sister, Cinder)
In a flash of movement, Cinder’s long heavy sword was hovering over his shoulder, the ornate hilt wrapped in her fist and the business end pointed at the largest of the shifters, who was, of course, unarmed.
Having witnessed the appearance of Morpheus with Tempe's situation he whispered fiercely, "If you have a brain in that brassy head of yours, you'll send your weapon flying back to the gatekeeper." Her head angled sharply, eyes narrowing dangerously on his as she mouthed brassy? but he ignored her.
Then, with a lazy smirk in the direction of the men she'd stupidly threatened out of self-defense—he hoped that made a difference to Morpheus—he said, "I can't take her anywhere. She's always showing off her fancy blade."
Livia Quinn: This book brought all the Pomeroys and Flambes’ together as their past comes full circle.
