Excerpt:

With quick feet, Ben blazed to the rear of the shop as he pondered Kandice’s words; I love you. Once upon a time, she possibly could have been his girl, although she didn’t show it. Why, he may never know. Thinking back, she was the only person he’d cared about being a newbie in Camden. As his mind burned with the memory of the first day they met, a surge of happiness soared through him while he tidied the shop. She was so beautiful that day, and still was, whether she loved him or not, he now didn’t feel the same way. Confusion mounted as he racked his brain to recall an inkling of affection on her part, which was none. She never accepted any of his date proposals and to his recollection, he’d asked her over a dozen times. Pushing the mop to and ‘fro on the tiled floors, anger overcame him, why now? He pulled the mop one last time and heaved a labored breath to stifle his rage.

Her cute self, with her small frame pulled on the mop handle. “You want me to wipe the counters for you?”

“Sure, that would be great. I’ll help after I finish this and empty the trash cans.”

Ben inched closer to her, “May I have a word with you?” He propped the mop against his left hand and leaned his chin on it. “Why did you say you loved me when you know you don’t?”

Kandice turned off the hot water, “Because I was jealous.”

“Jealous of Caroline, someone I barely know?”

“Yes!” She flung a clump of soapy suds onto his arms and shirt.

“Love me? That makes no sense, Kandice.” He wiped at the bubbles that lingered.

“I shouldn’t have said it,” she yelled and rolled her eyes. “Can we drop it?”

“Stop what you’re doing and come sit beside me.” Ben, as a rambunctious puppy, dashed and grabbed her stool then tugged her away from the sink.

“Let me get a cloth to dry my hands.” She snatched a rag off the counter and sat on the edge of the stool, “What?” She asked as she lifted her arms in the air looking shocked.

He narrowed his eyes on her, “Tell me the truth.”

“It just came out.”

“That response doesn’t tell me a thing. Okay… answer this, then.” Turning around on his stool, he got within inches of her face. “Will you be mad if I go out with Caroline because…” Can he say it? “The last thing I want to do is hurt you.”

Her bottom lip protruded as she released a pent-up breath, “I really don’t care if you go out with her” she huffed and swung her head to divert further eye contact.

He lifted her face, “Kandice?”

Tears trickled down her face, “No, Ben, I won’t be mad.” She slowly turned, “Please let it go?”

Ben’s shoulders slumped, “Why are you crying?” Her precious blue eyes deepened and her dark hair against her tanned skin looked gorgeous. He slid his fingers across her face. “You’re so beautiful when you’re mad.”

“Stop it,” as she pushed his hand away.
