Excerpt:


He reversed and instead of driving onto the gravel lane, he steered the truck through the grass. The squeaky shocks lurched over bumps and dips, sending her bouncing all over the lumpy seat. “Where are we going?” She pressed her hands on the dash as protection against flinging into his lap.


“It isn’t far.”


“Look, if this is some trick—”


“Lady—”


“My name is Melanie.”


“Good to know. Lady, you show up at my house and demand you want to see my brother and that’s where I’m taking you.” He slammed on the brakes and the truck whined and rattled in protest.


She glanced left and right. They were surrounded by fields and horses. “He’s out here?”


Without a word, he slid out and slammed the door.


“How obnoxious,” she whispered and got out too, jogging to catch up to him. “Are we in a race?”


Although he didn’t respond, he did slow down some.


She followed him up a steep hill that seemed to continue forever. Her boots sunk into the dirt and she was about to give up when they finally reached the top. She rounded him and crossed her arms over her chest, panting. “There is no one here.”


He placed his hands on her shoulders and she stared at him in shock. Where his fingers were on her skin a heat developed. “What are you doing?” she choked out.

Then he turned her around and she saw two headstones in the distance. Taking a step toward them, she read the first and then the second, “Cade Dawson.” Feeling her heart drop into her boots, she whipped around to face the cowboy. “What is this?” She continued to stare.


“This is how I know you can’t be pregnant by Cade. He died a year ago.”
