5+ stars for Alyce–Looking Through the Lycan Glass by Lynda Bailey #paranormal #99cents #bookreview

Title: Alyce – Looking Through the Lycan Glass

Author: Lynda Bailey

Genre: Coming of Age, Fantasy/Paranormal with Romantic Elements

Book Blurb:

My name is Alyce Thomason; I used to be a normal kid.

That is, if being “normal” means burying your mom on your sixteenth birthday – cuz that’s what I got to do. Now, I live with my aunt who hates me. I miss my mom so much. She used to tell me I was special…that I was meant for greatness. Too bad she won’t ever see that.

When I turn eighteen, I’ll be out of my aunt’s house and on my own, except that doesn’t happen. My dumbass twin cousins stumble down a rabbit hole into alternate universe – and take me with them. That’s not the weird part, though. The weird part is I’m some kind of idol to the occupants of this new world.

All I care about is getting me and the twins back home, or so I tell myself. I think I want to stay here, not because I’m The One – who needs that pressure – but because I’ve found something I haven’t had since my mom died…a place where I belong.

My Review:

Her name is Alyce but there’s nothing wonderful about this land…

Never in a million years would I have thought this book, a fairytale retelling with a dark twist, would be this good. It’s beyond good, stellar, or brilliant. Words don’t seem strong enough to express how much I loved this book. Alyce – Looking Through the Lycan Glass is one of the best books I’ve read in a long time. The world-building is flawless. The characters are original and relatable. The narration is deeply emotional. The action scenes are detailed. From the time I picked it up until I reached the end, I couldn’t get enough.

Let’s start with the characters. Alyce lost her mother at sixteen and has been living with her aunt, uncle, and twin cousins. It’s a horrid existence for Alyce. All that changes when she ‘falls’ down a rabbit hole along with her twin cousins and two teen boys. Reality for Alyce is flipped on its head and her ability to stay strong and not freak out makes her a true heroine. The other characters are well-written and will ring true of a classic fairytale. Lynda Bailey creates unique characters easy to connect to, even the whiny ones.

The world-building is incredible. This author builds a world so rich in detail, I wanted to hop right in. The layers of world-building make for immersive reading.

This is my first book by this author so naturally I have to talk about the writing. The plot progression is even with the right amount of conflict, action, and tension. The dialogue is engaging while the narration is emotive. Lynda Bailey is a talented writer who pulls the reader in and doesn’t let go until the very end. Her ability for storytelling is immense and I look forward to reading more from her.

My Rating: 5++ stars

Author Biography:

I’ve always loved stories. For me the only thing better than reading a story is writing one. That and drinking red wine while eating dark chocolate. I’m proud to have been a 2010 finalist in the prestigious Golden Heart®.

While Alyce – Through the Lycan Glass is a drastic departure from the steamy-hot, contemporary romances I usually write, it’s still full of passion and emotion. Please join me for laughter and love, and where the good guys win in the end – eventually.
