Title: Darker

Author: AK Nevermore

Genre: Paranormal MC Erotica

Book Blurb:

So much for sanctuary. Kit Parson doesn’t feel any safer than she was before she first stepped into the Maw of Mayhem, and things are going from bad to worse. Something big is definitely going down in the paranormal community… and inside Kit. Now that her inner beast has awoken, all it wants is out. The only thing Kit wants is Grim, but he’s got issues of his own.

Fingered for a crime he didn’t commit and injured by the witch’s spell, his cat Darke has control of their form. He doesn’t play well with others, and tensions with the crew are at an all-time high.

With the witches’ elite assassins on their trail, can Darke and the crew put aside their differences to keep Kit safe and get back to the MC? And as the clock ticks toward the vote with Grim’s reputation in shambles, will there be an MC to go back to?

My Review:

Darker by AK Nevermore is the second book in the Maw of Mayhem cat shifter motorcycle club romance series. It is the continuation of Grimdarke and Kit’s roller-coaster love story. I’m happy to report that this book solves several of the cliffhangers that were at the end of Grimdarke (Book 1.) Readers will meet Kit’s inner cat, named Kat. Their budding relationship was my favorite part of the book. Despite the confusion over similar names, Kit/Kat have wildly different personalities. They reside in the same body, so readers get more of the internal banter that Nevermore excels in writing. Their spats had me in stitches.

The plot revolves around the vampires of Nevermore’s world, revealing the secrets of Mr. Asorav. In Grimdarke, he was Kit’s employer before she knew she was a shifter. In Darker, we learn how deep their connection goes. He helps our cat shifters escape the wrath of the witches with the adventure and twists (including a sewer system chase with monsters) of an exciting urban fantasy novel.

I loved the vampire politics and the different types of vampire powers assigned by caste. The focus on the larger world allows the reader to understand the context of some of the rivalries built in Grimdarke. I hope Book 3 explores these further and brings them into the Mayhem Maw club dynamics. What I missed from Book 1 was the banter between the motorcycle club members and the resolution of the problems within the club. This book doesn’t have scenes in the clubhouse, on bikes, or within their various businesses. There are unanswered questions in these areas that I hope are revisited in the next book.

The cliffhangers resolved are the emergence of Kat within Kit and the claiming of the mates. This book is very spicy, much more than Grimdarke. I loved watching Kat and Darke convincing their human selves to hurry the relationship along. With Kat stuck inside Kit, the female’s frustration lent itself to hilarious banter.

Overall, I highly recommend Darker to paranormal romance and spicy urban fantasy readers. While the motorcycle club makes this series unique, it is not explored in this book. I can’t wait for the focus to narrow to the club in the next book.

Author Biography:

AK Nevermore enjoys operating heavy machinery, freebases coffee, and gives up sarcasm for Lent every year. A Jane-of-all-trades, she’s a certified chef, restores antiques, and dabbles in beekeeping when she’s not reading voraciously or running down the dream in her beat-up camo Chucks.

Unable to ignore the voices in her head, and unwilling to become medicated, she writes Science Fiction and Fantasy full time.

AK pays the bills writing a copious amount of copy, along with a column on SFF. She belongs to the Authors Guild, is an RWA chapter board member, volunteers for far too many committees, teaches creative writing, and on the rare occasion, sleeps.
