Book Blurb:

With the death of an oppressive and overprotective husband, Janet suddenly becomes a very rich widow. Euphoric with her newfound freedom and wealth, she buys a lovely race filly, and spends a warm winter paradise at a five-star Southern hotel. She is hopeful for a new beginning and luck brings her a new love interest.

But she quickly discovers life is filled with danger and pitfalls. She will have to use and sharpen her wits to save herself.

One night, when her new man fails to arrive for dinner, she discovers his battered corpse and quickly finds herself the prime suspect.

Though pleased and relieved when her niece comes to stay with her, she soon discovers the young woman has been trailed by a vicious stalker.

With at least one killer on the loose at the elegant, southern hotel, can she expose the assassin before death strikes again?

My Review:

Janet discovers her new beau murdered and she’s the number one suspect. Can she unravel the mystery before she’s hauled off to jail? Murder at the Willcotts Hotel is a mystery set in the heart of the South where the well-to-do expect to be treated with class not questioned for murder. The descriptive narration is immersive. The characters are well-written and well-spoken. The mystery unfolds at an even pace with a few twists to make it intriguing.

Let’s start with the characters. Janet is a wonderfully sweet widow with a penchant for uncovering crimes. She relies on her best friend to weed out the gold diggers. She’s shy but has a sharp mind and an eye for detail. I connected with her right away. As she navigates the false clues and discovers the real murderer, I was right there with her. The other characters are original, and each has their own air of mystery. The cast of characters is fairly large for a novella, but I was able to keep them straight.

The descriptive narration is very detailed. I thoroughly enjoyed staying at this historic hotel and seeing it through Janet’s viewpoint. Every scene is described down to the last detail.

The plot progression is the perfect tempo, not too fast and not too slow. The writing is easy to follow yet has a sophisticated vibe. Sasscer Hill is a talented writer with a gift for writing mysteries. It had me guessing until the very end. Well done.
