Title: Southwest of Love and Murder (Love and Murder Series, book 2)

Author: Brenda Whiteside

Genre: Romantic Suspense

Book Blurb:

Mystery writer, Phoebe Anderson, owes her success to killing her first husband on paper seventeen years earlier. Now, someone has actually done it. When she decides to take a few days away on the ranch of her best friend’s brother-in-law, she doesn’t expect romance to find her...or murder to follow her.

Mason Meadowlark is happy with his wild cowboy ways, avoiding love since the death of his baby and the end of his marriage twenty years ago. When Phoebe shows up, he fights to control his emotions, but soon wonders if she just might be worth the risk of opening his heart again.

With an obsessed fan close on her heels, Phoebe is thrown into her own murder mystery…and the next target on his list is Mason.

Excerpt:

“I have to tell you, Mr. Meadowlark. Some patrons said you were quite upset with Carla. You were heard saying—” He consulted his notes. “I’d remove her from my life if I could.”

Phoebe caught her breath.

Mason remained quiet, but the tension in his body could be felt against her side. The detective stared at him, waiting.

She couldn’t stand the silence and didn’t give a damn if Mason wanted no response to the detective. “What you’re implying is ridiculous.” She sat forward on the couch.

“I’m not implying anything, Ms. Anderson. I need to confirm what our interviews have discovered.” He closed his notebook, finally bringing his bushy browed face to consider her. “Did you hear the comment?”

She’d heard it all right. The beating of her heart now mounted a lump in her throat. He’d made the confession directly to her. But surely not—

“Ms. Anderson?”

“Yes.” She could barely force the word from her mouth.

Mason narrowed his eyes. “A statement made in a disagreement, but with no intended malice, isn’t enough to assume I can commit murder, Detective Bunch.”

“No, you’re right about that, Mr. Meadowlark. Words aren’t enough. There is the matter of the murder weapon, the steak knife.” He put his notebook away in his pocket. “And since the only missing steak knife from any table in the dining room was from your table, well, that speaks louder.”
