5++ stars for The Spear Alight by Judith Sterling #bookreview #yalit #paranormalfantasy #ireland

Title: The Spear Alight

Author: Judith Sterling

Genre: YA Paranormal Fantasy

Book Blurb:

Ashling Donoghue has almost lost hope of finding her missing parents. As her faith wanes, her love for two men waxes, rending her heart and causing friction in the Breasal household. The time has come to make a choice, to create a future untarnished by doubt. But how can she embrace the light when lured by the soft seduction of shadow?

At last, her brother Conall channels the Spear of Illumination. He's a natural shapeshifter, and he sees through illusions in both the material world and the Otherworld…not a moment too soon. An ancient evil has surfaced, and it threatens all worlds.

Only the Donoghues can save Ireland. They must face their greatest fears and act as one to fulfill their destinies as guardians of Erin.

My Review:

Ashling and her three siblings need to harness their fears if they’re going to defeat an ancient evil and save Ireland. Adrift in a sea of emotions, Ashling has never felt more alone. Her parents are still missing. She’s torn between her love for two men, yet her betrayal will never be forgiven. Someone close to her dies at the hands of an ancient evil. Ashling needs to fortify her strength because the final showdown is about to take place on Halloween when the veil between worlds is weakened. Four treasures, four guardians of Erin, are all that stand between pure evil and the downfall of Ireland.

The Spear Alight is an exceptional young adult paranormal fantasy from start to finish. I’ve read every book in this series and this book is the best of them all. Yes, this is the last book in the series but I’m telling you, it’s a masterpiece. The characters, the conflicts, the emotional tension, the world-building, the expressive narration all blend together to make this story one of the very best I’ve ever read. I even cried a bit. The characters have grown so much over the series, and I’ve grown attached to them, even Lorcan. It’s all been building up to this final battle and the stakes couldn’t have been higher. The Irish mythology woven throughout the plot adds depth, authenticity, and pure reading enjoyment. Judith Sterling has outdone herself with sophisticated writing and plot progression. The reader is swept into her created world and doesn’t want to leave. Just in time for St. Patrick’s Day, immerse yourself in Ireland with The Spear Alight. Highly recommend!

Author Biography:

Judith Sterling is an award-winning author whose love of history and passion for the paranormal infuse everything she writes. Whether penning medieval romance (The Novels of Ravenwood) or young adult paranormal fantasy (the Guardians of Erin series), her favorite themes include true love, destiny, time travel, healing, redemption, and finding the hidden magic which exists all around us. She loves to share that magic with readers and whisk them far away from their troubles, particularly to locations in the British Isles.

Her nonfiction books, written under Judith Marshall, have been translated into multiple languages. She has an MA in linguistics and a BA in history, with a minor in British Studies. Born in that sauna called Florida, she craved cooler climes, and once the travel bug bit, she lived in England, Scotland, Sweden, Wisconsin, Virginia, and on the island of Nantucket. She currently lives in Salem, Massachusetts with her husband and their identical twin sons.
