Title: Whistle While You Lurk
Author: Judith Sterling
Genre: Gothic Cozy Mystery
Book Blurb:
Listen for the Whistler reads the title of the gothic romance Gwyneth Camm discovers on the foyer floor. Her deceased Aunt Ethel is at it again, guiding Gwyn to enter the story and stand in for its 1970s heroine.
While traveling abroad, said heroine tours the centuries-old home of an English baronet and notes her uncanny resemblance to a supposed seventeenth-century witch in a family portrait. She soon becomes the baronet’s guest and a target of the malevolent force known as “the whistler.” Gwyn must face the danger head-on, for solving the mystery is her ticket home.
My Review:
Gwyn is whisked into another gothic mystery where she’ll go toe-to-toe with a demented spirit known as the whistler. It whistles while stalking the Palgrave heirs through the centuries who die under mysterious circumstances. When Gwyn hears the whistles, she knows she must follow the clues and save the Palgrave family before her time runs out.
Whistle While You Lurk is a gothic cozy mystery I couldn’t stop reading. Once I started, I stayed up reading this story because I couldn’t put it down. The narration is so immersive, like Gwyn, you are propelled into the story. You become a part of the characters. The gothic vibe is flawless in every way. The characters are colorful and vibrant. There’s even a bit of romance thrown in for good measure.
I really enjoyed the historical tidbits Judith Sterling put into Whistle While You Lurk. In the first part before Gwyn transports, there is a conversation where Gwyn shares historical facts about the Salem Witch Trials. It was very informative and, in my opinion, adds realism to the story.
The characters really shine in Whistle While You Lurk, especially Gwyn. She is such a dynamic heroine who adjusts to any situation. She takes on elitist Brits who look their nose down at her without any effort. She befriends the Palgraves and keeps Sir Crispin on his toes. She’s honest, curious, and has immense strength.
Take my advice and read this gothic cozy mystery. It’s brilliant and I can’t wait for the next installment.
