Excerpt:
It was driving Nathan mad, not being certain Lucas Jax was the father. He could ask her outright. But he’d have to tell her why he wanted to know. No way was he getting into all that history. Even after five years it was as raw as a blown-off limb.
He’d shot himself in the foot with the house-sale comment. She’d think he still wanted her to leave. He could apologise. But it was a whole conversation he wasn’t ready to have. Yet he couldn’t seem to stay away.
“You brought me a housewarming gift? Does this mean you’ve accepted me as a neighbour?”
“You know what they say. Better the devil you know.”
As she unwrapped it, he felt strangely apprehensive in case she didn’t like it. But she cradled the miniature wishing well in both hands, smoothing her thumbs over the little bird he’d carved into the barrel.
“It’s a swift in flight, the Swift Heritage logo,” he told her. “There’s an inscription on the back.”
“Olivia’s Whispered Wishes?”
Would she think he was a moron for being sentimental? “There’s an old saying you should always whisper a wish, in case you need help to make it come true.”
“That’s so lovely!”
She was cranking the tiny brass handle. The wooden bucket slid up and down the chain. He gave her an antique silver sixpence from his dad’s collection.
“You put the coin in the bucket. When it hits the bottom, it tips the coin out and you can make your wish.”
“You made this, didn’t you? It’s beautiful, Nathan. Thank you.”
It was on the tip of his tongue to tell her she was beautiful. How stupidly cheesy would that be! He’d never gone in for lingering looks across the room.
“I wish for everyone to be happy,” she whispered when the coin tipped out.
