My Review:
The culinary world is an acquired taste. My twenty years in the food industry taught me it is good to know when to get out, which is why I am a retired Chef.
Here Jonathan has goals he has set for how to achieve what he feels he needs to in the world of being a Chef.
The world of high-end chefs is very cutthroat but perhaps not as literally as Jonathan's world. This story works in the fun and adventure of magic and sorcery to the heart of the plot. There are some chefs that seem magical and there are literally magical chefs in Jonathan's world.
The characters here are extremely well written. The main characters, Jonathan and Ellie, are very real. The intensity of the culinary world is also accurately portrayed here. The constant striving for the next great dish and the next great ingredient wears on the best and worst chefs equally. That intensity is another reason I am a retired Chef. I prefer cooking gourmet meals for two instead of 200.
The action and magic of the book bring back halcyon memories of young Harry Potter and his world. The plot is extremely well written, and your jaw will drop when you read the hook. I am not spoiling this, just read it yourself. Anyone who has worked in the food industry will love this book. Anyone who enjoys magic and adventure will love this book. Another book from this author would be a tasty dish to savor!
