Sometimes the only way to stop the world from going to Hell is by working with Demons.

Hyacinth Finch has one goal: Save her nephew Geordi from the Hell Demon who kidnapped him. But to succeed, she’ll have to work with his demon Mafia relatives, which she swore she’d never do. Worse, she’ll have to make another deal with the High Demons who murdered her. But Geordi’s life is worth it, even if she loses her own humanity in the process.

Meanwhile, Hyacinth’s ghost boyfriend Eric is wasting away, after being ejected from his “borrowed” body. While digging in his past for something to make him fight for survival, she uncovers secrets that could destroy their relationship. Moreover, her feelings for Geordi’s demon cousin Jason are stronger than ever, though every morally impossible choice she makes drives him farther away. Can she save Eric and Geordi, without losing herself—and Jason—forever?

My Review:

Just when I think this series can’t get any better, Kerry Blaisdell pens another jaw-dropping tale. This award-winning series has everything you could want in a paranormal book including a fallible heroine, a mission to undertake, enemies closing in, a love triangle, and more twists and turns than you’d ever expect. The world-building is second to none with impeccable consistency and layers upon layers of mythology.

Let’s begin with the characters. Over the course of the series, I have loved Hyacinth. It’s been such an experience watching her grow throughout the series. In this book, though, we see her fall apart. Now, this is very important because she reaches a point where all hope is lost, and she breaks down. It’s a reminder to all of us that even heroes/heroines falter. All of the characters are expertly written with their own personality exploding from the pages.

One of the best parts in this book is the world-building. Kerry Blaisdell is one of the finest writers when it comes to world-building. She’s created a world that is so intricately detailed yet realistic, I’m a believer that it could happen in real life. The mythos she invents about life, death, angels, demons, and all its hierarchy is brilliantly portrayed. But what makes her world-building better than the rest is her flawless continuity. This is book four in the series yet it’s consistent with what is written in book one. Not even the mega bestsellers can do that.

Another outstanding book by Kerry Blaisdell, this is one of the best paranormal books I’ve had the pleasure to read. If you want an unputdownable book to kick off 2023, don’t wait and read Burying the Dead. I can’t wait to see what happens next.

My Rating: 5++ stars
