Book Blurb:

A New England Seaside Town has more than one surprise for Rebecca. As she searches for self-discovery, she learns that there are only two constants in life - family and the call of the ocean. Rebecca Reid is a successful woman whose perfectly planned life leaves her questioning her romantic relationship and her future. After a visit with her grandmother, Helen Simas, whom she holds a special bond with since childhood, she’s left revisiting her choices and reasons for leaving home. Through Helen’s stories, Rebecca learns about her family history, the purpose of life, and the unbreakable bonds we share with family. Will Rebecca find the answers she needs in the same City by the Sea that captivated the hearts of her family decades before?

Excerpt:

It must've been so strange for my grandmother to visit after being away for decades while she made a new life with my grandfather. I watched her quickly wipe a tear from her cheek, as she lay entranced by the movement of the waves in front of her. Her thoughts were lost among the tide, remaining forever unsaid to the world around her.

I placed my arm around her, my head gently resting on hers. My heart overflowed with a sense of peace as I shared that moment with her. I finally had the chance to comfort her the way she had comforted me so many other times. We sat on our beach towels in silence, staring out at the waves as they swayed back and forth over the sand. I didn't want to leave, but when the moon began to rise above the darkening sky, I knew it was time.

"I've never seen the moon look more magnificent than it does now, high above the crashing waves," I said in amazement.

"I have, my dear, in this very spot. And its beauty will never cease to amaze you no matter how many times you see it."

As early darkness set in, the moon didn’t compete with the ocean, but became its perfect companion, reflecting its warm and bright glow in the rippling waves below. It created a peaceful and enchanting harmony that I couldn’t easily forget.

I stared at the scene before me in awe. How incredible it would be to see this every night! As I gazed into the vastness of the ocean, I finally understood the significance of feeling small in the presence of nature. It was humbling and empowering.

A gentle poke at my sleeve took me out of the moment. It was time to end our perfect day, but my soul grew restless for more.

------

We got to our hotel in the evening, and after dinner inspiration flared. I searched for the sketchpad I'd made a point to pack. Once I found it, I stared at it. It had been so long since I'd drawn anything other than campaign graphics, that I was a little nervous I'd lost the talent for good. Flipping to a blank page, I began to draw, the sounds of pencil strokes echoed off the page and into the silence that filled the room.

I lay on the heavily padded king bed sketching for about an hour before a knock from the adjoining room sounded. My grandmother walked in after waking from a short nap.

I handed her the pad with a smile on my face. "Oh Rebecca, this is beautiful! It captures the very essence of the beaches—awe-inspiring and strong."

She handed it back to me, and I analyzed the picture I'd created to make sure it was exactly right. The side-to-side pencil strokes created the beginning impression of the water, one by one, combining to form the strong surf we saw at both Easton's Beach and Second Beach. The sharp lines formed the giant cliffs that peaked stately from the rippling waves. Curves and shading replicated the delicate sand's contours. The m-shaped curve of the distant seagulls captured the very essence of the ocean's vastness and wild beauty. I still had the talent, and now I had new inspiration. I knew exactly where to go the next day and grew eager with anticipation throughout the night.
