Excerpt:

I walk back to my office and continue going through my emails, when I hear my cell phone ping. Who’s texting me now?

It’s Mark, my friend who owns the bagel stand. “Hey, Bev. Are you coming by the stand in the morning?”

“Yes, of course. I can’t live my life without your amazing coffee and bagels,” I text back.

“Oh, you are too sweet. Can’t wait to see you in the morning,” he proclaims.

“Can’t wait to see your smiling face, Mark,” I reply.

“We really need a game night soon! I miss you!” Mark requests.

“I agree! We will plan something soon!” I reply and lock my phone back. I am about to have dinner with my soul mate. I don’t need my cute, tempting friend to distract me right now.

I look back to my computer to start answering emails again and realize it is time to start making my way to the restaurant to meet Davis. Time flew by way too quickly. I still have a ton of emails to answer. I decide I will answer them from home after our dinner as I walk out of my office. As I round the corner from the hallway to the reception area, I hear the elevator ding. I look up to see Davis getting off the elevator.

“Hey, Bev. Glad I caught you. We can walk over to the restaurant together since you are here still,” Davis nonchalantly nods his head toward the elevator door and presses the down button.

“Oh, what a nice surprise. Shall we?” I grin as I signal towards the opening elevator once more.

I get a glimpse of Sheila with her wide eyes and a huge smirk across her entire face, and I immediately know she is thinking bad things. I squint my eyes at her to try to send her a message to stop daydreaming about Davis and me.

We step on the elevator, and he reaches across me to press the one button. Again, my whole body starts to tingle. He didn’t even touch me this time.

I try to talk myself down in my head — Beverly, girl. You have got to stop. He is going through a divorce, and it probably is not going to be pretty.

My heart starts to race, and I can feel my face getting flushed. I know this elevator better open quick before my knees start to fade again.

Just as I think I am going to burst at the seams, the elevator door dings, and we made it to the lobby, or so I thought. In my distracted state, I fail to notice we have stopped on floor thirteen, not one. Three people pile into the elevator with us, and Davis moves closer to me to give them room on the other side of the elevator from us. I can smell him now. This is getting dangerous. He is close enough I could press him against the side of this elevator and let my lips show him what my body is thinking, but I am pulled from my dirty thoughts as the final ding of the elevator rings to my ears. We made it. Back to my senses. We are here for business, I remind myself.

We make small talk as we walk across the way to the fancy steak house. I can see the dimmed light, candlelight dinner setting through the large glass windows as we approach the front of the ivy walled building. Hmmm. Kind of romantic.

We enter the restaurant, and the host jumps up, “Davis, so happy to see you. We have your table ready. Please follow me.”

I look towards Davis with a confused expression. “I always call ahead to get the booth in the back. I like to be in a quiet, secluded area. Not up in everyone’s business where people I know want to stop and talk to me,” Davis explains with a shrug as if I should expect nothing less. Seclusion. With Davis. In a romantic restaurant. Probably more dangerous than being alone with him in an elevator.
