Excerpt:

“Maybe you’re right and I shouldn’t have been left on my own, but I was, and I get your point.” She aimed for a conciliatory tone, something light and easy to soften her outburst. “Now if you can direct me back to the correct path, I’ll be on my way. Lesson learned.”

“You’d like that, wouldn’t you? There’s only one problem. That’s not the way it works out here, sweetheart.”

“And I’m not your sweetheart, so quit with the false endearment.” Tara aimed for a stronger, more demanding tone.

Raphael didn’t scare her, at least not like the others. His image didn’t line up with how she pictured a drug lord, and because of it, she wasn’t above pressing her luck. He glared at her more like she was a pesky nuisance rather than a threat. But then again, it was not as if she’d ever met a criminal drug lord.

“First off, my men are out searching for others because I don’t believe anyone would be foolish enough to let you prowl around on your own. Your story doesn’t wash, and it would be asinine for you to venture out here alone and unprotected. Second, you crossed into private Night Hawk territory, and I’m sure you know who they are since you’re staying around here. Third, once you allowed yourself to be captured, you became the property of the Night Hawks. Do I make myself clear?”

Tara focused on the two most important words in his little diatribe. “What do you mean by captured and property?” Disbelief echoed in her words.

“Exactly what the words imply. As of this moment you belong to the Night Hawks. To me specifically, sweetheart. You left me with no alternative when you wandered into our fields and now you’ve seen too much to let you leave. Trust me, this isn’t my first choice either.”

He couldn’t mean what it sounded like he was saying. She hadn’t been doing anything wrong, at least not to his knowledge. Tara regretted her impetuous decision more than ever. She should have paid more attention to the VNO warnings, but no, she had to risk it all to get a few pictures. Once she’d heard about the coca fields in the area, her appetite for a story began to grow, and the path to Dona Luisa’s house had come too close for her not to venture out and try to find the fields. Apparently, the odds of her being discovered had been better than she expected.

But Raphael needed to think again if he thought she would just give in to the implications in his words. The very idea was preposterous. She was no man’s property and while she was still free, she would fight to keep it that way. Trained and fit and with her freedom on the line, Tara would do the only thing she could do when the opportunity presented itself. Run.
