Author: Nancy J. Cohen

Genre: Cozy Mystery

Book Blurb:

A remodeling project gone awry, a deadly Easter egg hunt, and a Fourth of July murder at a living history village make for a sparkling cozy mystery collection.

In this trio of adventures, hairstylist Marla Vail solves an Easter murder at an elegant manor house; helps her mother whose remodeling project goes down the drain when the project manager is murdered; and discovers a dead body during a battle reenactment at a living history village over Fourth of July weekend.

EASTER HAIR HUNT

An Easter egg hunt at historic Tremayne Manor leads hairstylist Marla Vail to discover more than just dyed eggs. The dead man in the bunny suit is definitely not having a good hare day. Marla’s husband, homicide detective Dalton Vail, knows she finds solving mysteries to be irresistible, but she may have found a basketful of trouble this time. Can Marla use her eggcellent sleuthing skills to crack the case?

STYLED FOR MURDER

When salon owner, Marla Vail, gets a frantic call from her mother that there’s a dead body in her shower, Marla realizes this wasn’t part of the home remodel plans. The victim turns out to be the project manager, who had a shady reputation in town. Disgruntled customers, unpaid suppliers, and the design company’s staff are among the suspects, but Marla is more concerned about her stepfather’s connection to the victim. Reed is keeping secrets and he won’t come clean about what he knows. Can she flush out the clues and nail the killer before he strikes again?

My Review:

Wow, what a brilliant cozy mystery box set! Featuring three full-length cozy mysteries, this box set is a feast for cozy mystery lovers. The plots move at a fast pace. The dialogue is witty, sharp, and hilarious. The characters are so funny, especially Marla. The descriptive narration is intricate, and the writing is superb. The Bad Hair Day Mysteries Box Set Volume Six: Books 16-18 is an unputdownable read.

EASTER HAIR HUNT – Marla discovers a person in an Easter Bunny costume dead but when she unmasks the bunny, it’s the gardener. Why would anyone kill the estate’s gardener and why was he dressed up as the Easter Bunny? I loved this Easter-themed mystery. Twists and turns had me whipping through the story until the very end.

STYLED FOR MURDER – Marla gets a frantic call from her mother. A man has been murdered in her shower. Well, that wasn’t part of the renovations, was it? With more suspects than you can shake a hammer at, Marla will have to work fast to deliver the killer. What a great cozy mystery! I loved the mix of intrigue, humor, and home reno antics. Marla surely has a nose for detecting.

STAR TANGLED MURDER – It’s the 4th of July and Marla and her husband are vacationing in Florida. When a battle reenactment goes terribly wrong and a dead body is discovered, Marla will have to sort through the villagers to discover who wanted the victim dead. It’s a big task as there are more suspects than grains of beach sand. Can Marla catch the killer before she’s next? What a fun-filled patriotic cozy mystery. Marla is at the top of her game in this mystery. The locale is lovely, and I was transported.

These stories live and die on its dialogue. If you're like me and enjoy laughing while reading cozy mysteries, you're going to love hairstylist Marla, her detective husband and her friends. Marla is friendly, observant and has a running stream of thoughts that'll have you whipping through the pages.

The other reason is the cast of characters. The Bad Hair Day Mysteries Box Set Volume Six: Books 16-18 features a large cast of characters, many of whom are suspects. Marla is my new favorite cozy mystery heroine. She's so smart, her mind reminds me of one of my favorite literary sleuths. Her profession is different from other cozy sleuths which I found refreshing.

Nancy J. Cohen is a masterful writer, and her writing is flawless. The plots are crisp, clean, and move at a nice cozy pace. The conflicts and tensions are spot on. The mysteries themselves are well executed and I enjoyed trying to solve them before Marla does.

If you're a cozy mystery reader, you will want to read this box set. If you're looking for a good laugh, pick up this box set right now. Even though this is box set six, it can be read out of order or as a standalone. I can’t wait to read more Marla cozy mysteries.
