The Maddie Chronicles: Books 1-3 follows self-help book junkie Maddie Hickman on her quest for self-understanding as she navigates her way through high school. Unfortunately, her alcoholic sister and Bad Boy ex-boyfriend hijack the journey and break her heart. Through it all, her Bubbie’s words of wisdom and her trusted journal prove to be all the self-help she really needs.

Excerpt from Book 1, My Sister’s Wedding:

I grip the phone tightly when Justin’s mom answers.

“Hi, sweetie,” She says, sounding tired. “The momser got in late and is a total mess. I can’t promise you he’s coming.”

Whenever Justin had been out all night, she called him the momser, which is Yiddish for idiot.

I burst into tears.

“Now don’t let him ruin this special day.”

“But it’s not special if he’s not here.”

“You go and enjoy your sister’s wedding. Justin will be fine. But he’s in no shape to be at the wedding. You know how he is after a late night. He won’t be good company.”

I sigh. What I don’t understand is how she deals with him. What does she say when he comes home smelling like alcohol?

“Tell him I called.”

When I hang up, my hand lingers on the receiver, as if holding onto the connection would help Justin. Finally, I let go. There’s nothing I can do. He’s not coming.

So I turn around and…bump smack into a guy in a waiter uniform. He’s a few inches taller than me, with these eyes as solid and dark as a Hershey’s kiss.

“Oh! Oops! Sorry!” he stammers. “They’re looking for you. You’re the sister of the bride. Right?”

“Yeah?”

“Well, I heard your mother and father asking where is. . . I mean, I didn’t get the name, but I saw you leave the reception and figured, well, you’re in a bridesmaid’s dress, so they’re probably talking about you.”

“Thank you. I’m on my way back in.”

“Wait a minute.” He looks at me like he’s trying to figure something out.

 I hesitate.

“Your last name is Hickman. Little Maddie! My sister used to babysit you!”

“Huh?”

“Angie Dunay. She’s my sister. I’m Sean.”

A quick memory of a little boy making fun of me for wearing two different socks—one striped and one bright blue. I remember it well. He sure looks different now. Angie used to bring him over to my house when she had to babysit.

“Oh yeah, I remember her. I think I remember you.” I always thought he was only a year or two older than me, but now he seems more than that.

“You probably don’t want to. I don’t think I was very nice back then.” He blushes. “You look a lot different.”

I have a massive zit on my nose, but I say nothing.

“You should give me your number. Maybe we can hang out sometime.”

I drop my shawl and then step on it, feeling myself start to slide to the ground. I mumble the digits of my phone number and scramble up to my feet. Then I stumble back to the reception.
