Although the Stakeholder had been correct in one regard. If Kern were a normal man, he’d have felt at least some attraction to the beautiful woman in the picture, but the military had siphoned most emotions from his mind. Early kills left him sick until he understood the kill-or-be-killed concept in his own near-death situation. After that, each kill desensitized him, chipping away at remorse until he felt nothing. Nothing but the satisfaction of a job completed. And killing was a job. Everyone was good at something, right? Of course. And for that reason, a home with a wife and kids would never be his.
A few hours later, his detailed research lay piecemeal across a table on how and where to complete his task. Enough hotel information for five separate trips sat in one pile. Coordinates and measurements looked like incomprehensible numbers in a note application on his good cell phone, the one that cost a thousand bucks. Everything else remained locked in his brain in the imaginary filing cabinet, complete with separate folders.
Now the real work began. Planning the process, every single move. Methodic in his actions, he spoke each step of his plan aloud. He mimicked the hand movements like breaking down the gun and opening doors through his route of escape. He envisioned the scenes in his mind, even the last one, where the lawyer fell to the ground dead, and he walked away, never to think of the woman again.

Author Biography –
Paula Minydzak is a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Her parents grew up across the street from each other in a small town where most people worked in the steel mills. Their Italian and Slovak families introduced her to ethnic foods, holidays, and religion, which became part of her lifestyle from a very young age. Some of her characters are based on family members and other Pittsburghers.
Written under the pen name Kaia Misk, Paula’s debut novel, The Firstborn Son, became a finalist in the NJ Romance Writers Best First Book category in 2023. Since then, she moved from writing romance to writing suspense.
She is an excellent tailor and patternmaker, as shown through her IMDb page listing her costuming work on two full-length films. She currently lives in Pittsburgh with her Norwegian Elkhound, Boss.
