In the summer of 1993, I spent a few hours in Plymouth, England. As I wandered the cobbled, medieval streets of the historic quarter, a sense of déjà vu washed over me. One road in particular stood out, for I seemed to know each twist and turn before it came. After a short time, I came upon the entrance to an Elizabethan Garden, and the urge to see it grabbed hold of me.

A sign blocked the entryway: “Closed for maintenance.” My heart sank, and I turned to leave.

“Can I help you, Miss?” a deep voice asked.

I spun around. A workman in white stood on the threshold. By all appearances, he was a painter, but how he’d materialized so quickly and quietly was a mystery.

“I-I’m only here for a few hours,” I stammered, “and I was hoping to see the garden. I see it’s closed, though.”

“You’re American,” he said. It wasn’t a question.

“I am.”

“And you’re alone?”

“As alone as you can be.”

He looked right and left, then moved the sign. “Come in then, just for a bit.”

As I stepped through the archway, I wondered if I’d get him in trouble. On impulse, I turned to thank him.

He was nowhere in sight.

My hands found my hips. “What the—“

Go on, an inner voice advised. Look around. You’re supposed to be here.

I shrugged, then wandered into the garden. When I reached the heart of the site, I paused. An odd sensation—part premonition, part awe—gripped me. Lightheaded, I looked for a bench.

Flash! It was nighttime. The air was pungent with the warring scents of roses and manure. Beyond the refuge of hedge and herb, horse hooves clopped on stone. Laughter mingled with shouts.

Bam! Daylight returned, and I was back in the present. I took a deep breath and steadied myself. Then I studied my surroundings, acutely aware of what “belonged” and what did not. The Elizabethan stone and hand-carved arches were right; the modern buildings clashed.
